The Camaro was the best-selling muscle car in June by more than 1,000 units.

Building on the excitement over the new car, no doubt helped by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (http://jalopnik.com/5302111/transformers-revenge-of-the-awful/gallery/), the Camaro achieved sales of 9,320 units, compared to just 7,632 for the Mustang. Could this be the start of a trend?

Despite having fewer model variations on the market, pent up demand for Chevrolet's new Camaro appears to have been enough to send the bad Bowtie past Ford's redone Mustang (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/13/first-drive-2010-ford-mustang-gt/) in June. Sales figures for the month beginning to trickle-in industry-wide today, and General Motors says it shifted 9,320 Camaro units last month, as compared to the Blue Oval's 7,632.

Whether Chevrolet's victory will be a sustainable one over the long haul remains to be seen, but as The General has a backlog of 10,000 sold orders to fill (equating to less than a seven day supply), the streak is likely to continue for at least the next few months. Presently, GM offers just two main Camaro models, the V6 RS (http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/22/the-joy-of-six-2010-chevy-camaro-v6-rs/) and the V8-powered SS (http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/09/one-night-stand-taking-home-the-2010-chevy-camaro-ss/), While Ford's Mustang has more bodystyles and trims than you can shake a stick at (arguably making the Camaro's achievement seemingly that much more impressive).

Sales of the third leg of 2009's pony car table, the Dodge Challenger, trail far behind, with just 1,369 units cleared last month.

As the industry heads into the dog days of summer, it looks like America's renewed pony car war is just heating up. Who will take the crown for the whole year? Sit tight, muscle fans.

I'm hopeful that this will continue for both makes as it's good for both of the companies and good for us enthusiasts that like these kinds of cars.

V6 RS

V6 LS/LT ;)
You would think they would know by now that RS is a visual package you can get with the LT or the SS, not a model. Silly autoblog.

Challenger sold so few because there aren't any on the lots. Brampton finally went back to work 3 days ago after shutting down on May 1st. I think they had one or more shutdowns this past year to due to Chrysler's cash flow issues and supplier issues, as well.
I would believe they would have sold more if more had been on the lots.

I know it was very tough finding mine. I had to go to Omaha, NE to find it. A fellow co-worker was calling a dealer in Delaware to hopefully find one. It's been crazy.

Oh, and I read on a Chrysler employee forum where someone said that Brampton has 20,000 pending orders. He didn't specifically say "Challenger" but he implied they were orders for the Challengers.

FWIW, RS isn't available on the LS package. That means that when you see "V6 RS", the only question remaining is whether it's a 1LT or a 2LT.

Chevrolet’s all-new 2010 Camaro is back with a vengeance, dethroning the Ford Mustang as the best-selling pony car during the month of June. The Camaro was one of the loan bright spots for General Motors as demand for the Camaro nearly doubled the automaker’s expectations.Chevrolet managed to sell 9,320 examples of the Camaro last [...]

They are outselling Mustangs right now, because they have been gone for 8 years, and there is a huge pent up demand.

Nobody should find this surprising. I know I don't.

It really doesn't matter if the car has been gone for 7 years, things like this help confirm that the car is a winner and has been successful in winning the public over. It could be doing the exact opposite regardless of how long it was on hiatus. Make no mistake, the Camaro outselling the M*stang in any way since the 3rd Gen, is huge news. Especially in these times.

What's also quite possible is for the segment to grow drastically now that there is increased interest in the muscle car segment. I've seen sales numbers grow in some segments by 500%. It's not the slice of the pie that's important, it's how big that pie gets, sometimes.

Great news. Frankly the faster they build em the closer we get to getting all of these dealers to stop playing games with pricing and taking orders from their customers. At this rate GM will build about 70,000 cars or more before the end of the year. I am guessing we are about two months away from the supply demand to being a much closer match. Looking at Cars.com they have been sitting on lots a little longer than a few weeks ago. By sitting I mean a few days versus hours. I am happy to see the crooks not getting the huge markups because those cars have been sitting for weeks.

I am buying in December so things should be sane by the time I am ready to sign on the dotted line.

That's basically what I've said the other four or five times that Camaro's impressive sales figures have been brought up.

Wait until next year and we'll get a better idea of how demand for Camaro stacks up against other cars.

Me thinks the demand will continue to grow. Sooo many people have just not seen the car in the flesh...everywhere I go I get thumbs up and stares...that means that some of these people considering mustang cause they are not that loyal(the ones on the fence)....may swing to Camaro. Keep the word out...and keep talking about a new great North American car...

very good news. i cant believe the challanger only sold 1369 cars last month.

There hasn't been a Challenger rolling off the assembly line for nearly 2 months (assembly shut down back on May 1st, and only just restarted).

There hasn't been a Challenger in any local showrooms here in some time.

You can't sell what you don't make and don't have in showrooms to sell.

Plus, Chrysler (with an amazing lack of foresight) didn't up production ratio of Challenger (their highest demand car from the Brampton assembly plant) to other LX cars ahead of their shutdown. There were already people getting frustrated at the snails pace of Challenger production and cancelled their orders.

Chrysler has shot themselves in the foot regarding the Challenger.

We'll soon see if they get it together and get Challenger production up near where demand is.

I drove past a Dodge dealership yesterday, 3 of em sitting in the lot, just parked with the regular cars, not in the showroom or anything. Maybe they had another inside, but it looks like they are starting to sit a bit.

What about the pent up demand for mustangs that have a decent interior?

Try to find an R/T stick.

You got a good point there.....not having someones idea of a "decent interior" is very similar to not having an interior at all.

Good catch!

More info on Chrysler's June sales, including the Challenger:

Only one Chrysler Group LLC model showed a sales increase over June of last year, the Dodge Challenger muscle car.

However, the plant shutdowns has led to low inventory of some models. The company now has only a 40-day supply of the Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Caravan minivans, and it's also low on Jeep Wranglers, Sebring convertibles and Challengers, she said.
