April Sales Jump 50% to 151,000 Units

General Motors Sets New Monthly Sales Mark in China

Shanghai – General Motors and its domestic joint ventures set a new company record for monthly sales in China in April. Driven by growing demand for the Buick and Wuling portfolios, domestic sales jumped 50.0 percent on an annual basis to 151,084 units.

Shanghai GM, one of China’s leading manufacturers of passenger cars, recorded a domestic sales increase in April of 34.7 percent year on year to 55,245 vehicles. Demand for its Buick lineup rose 63.6 percent to 38,071 vehicles. Sales of the Excelle lower-medium sedan increased by more than 120 percent to 22,078 units, while sales of the new Regal upper-medium sedan – which was introduced at the end of last year – totaled 6,368 units. Among the joint venture’s Chevrolet products, the all-new Cruze compact sedan got off to a good start with 3,739 sold in its first month on the market. Sales of the Lova compact sedan, Chevrolet’s most popular model in China, totaled 8,687 units.

SAIC-GM-Wuling, GM’s mini-commercial vehicle joint venture, increased domestic sales in April by 60.6 percent on an annual basis to 95,544 units. It continued to be led by China’s best-selling vehicle, the Wuling Sunshine minivan; 50,491 were sold nationwide last month. The joint venture also sold 18,176 Wuling Rongguang high-end minivans and 5,545 Chevrolet Spark mini-cars.

“Coming off a record month in March, GM is very satisfied with the ongoing strength in domestic sales of both of our joint ventures,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “We are particularly pleased with the resurgence of the Buick brand. Our new product offensive, which is still in its early stages, has helped get customers into our showrooms and increase demand across the board.”

Was there any reason that the Cruze was launched in Europe and Asia before the US? Crash standards?

I've heard something about waiting for the 1.4 turbo engine line to be running.

Just in time for the new 2011 Focus and Civic to be out with their 40mpg engines.

I've heard something about waiting for the 1.4 turbo engine line to be running.I've read the same thing. Not enough NA powerplants available to start production. I'm actually excited about the turbo 1.4L... almost as excited as I am about the Gen V V8. :p

I'm pretty excited to see this engine too, I still think it would have been a better move to put out the car with a 1.8L A6 combo and DI 2.4L.

I don't buy the "Not enough NA powerplants available to start production." excuse since Cobalt sales are down ~50%. There should be plenty of available VVT 2.2L's at least.

They need the Cruze to be fuel miserly from the word "Go" if they want to win converts. Putting the 2.2L in the Cruze would at best get them Cobalt numbers which would have "failure" written all over it. While they need the Cruze here yesterday, its important that its done correctly. Otherwise they should wait.

the notion that GM has a ~45 mpg car that looks great and has a quality interior and good performance......iit's going to have an easy time being advertised. cruze is easily the biggest car coming out of GM in years, and very very good buzz fot it, so long as the marketing holds up, will help spill onto malibu and camaro. i think for this reason alone 1.4 should be standard, and there should be no other engine for some time, to capitilize on the potential marketability of a fuel efficient well sized huge quality ~$17k car. pricing of this car, if it stays around $16k, will be a revolution for buyers, so long as that 45 mpg figure holds up. the cruze will be a continuance of a product cycle we're already in that's going to benefit GM going out of this crisis. 1.4 should not only be standard, it should be the only engine available for a 1.5 years.

It would be great to get that 40mpg number right from the start and maybe they could with the 6 speed auto and the 1.8L. 1.8L in Europe is getting something like 39mpg in the Astra (US Astra gearing sucks).

I'm just afraid that by MY2011 Cruze will be just another small car. Focus is getting a 1.6L Ecoboost engine and I'm sure Honda has something up their sleeve. Ford and Honda have a 1 year+ advantage to one up GM.

What does North American Buick have to do with the cost of tea, err Buicks, in China?

I know it isn't to spread out cost, we don't even have the same Buicks as them.

Well I think it would be hard to sell an American brand to wanting Chinese if it's not a brand actually in America.

All Buicks going forward will be shared between the U.S. and China. We might not have everything that they have (small cars, business vans) but they will have everything that we have.

Oh no. If they have what we have then Buick in China will be sunk.

On the way home from work, I was caught in stop and go traffic next to a Volvo C70, exactly like this one:

I thought that this is just the direction Buick should take.
