Wow! What a ride it’s been …
When I think back to the Camaro coupe concept reveal and the emotion that was shown on nearly everyone’s face - a bit of awe, admiration, pride and yes, even tears … that was a moment that I will never forget! There is just something inexplicable about the love that people have for the Camaro and it was obvious in their faces.
The new 2010 Camaro seems to evoke an instant attraction, people are truly drawn by its gorgeous looks. Those of us who are fortunate to drive one of the new cars are met daily with constant stares, cell phone pictures and instant celebrity status. We quickly realize that it’s not us, it’s the car …
I’ve been able to be a part of the Camaro team since our early work on the concept car. There is no lack of enthusiasm or passion on our team for sports cars. We’ve had the “blessing” of working 24/7 on this car between the work in North America and Australia and many places in between. While it was important to have the right look, the Camaro also had to have the right stuff. The team included technology like Bluetooth capability, USB port, auxiliary input jack and the ability to wirelessly control your music sources like iPods, flash drives or other mp3 devices.
And last but not least is performance. For the 3.6L V6 DI VVT engine; the Camaro delivers 29 mpg highway and 304 horsepower. Can you believe that? Power and efficiency! The 6.2L V8 delivers 426 HP and 24 mpg highway with the manual trans and 400 HP and 25 mpg with the automatic trans. Both V8 transmissions will go 0-60 mph in 4.7 secs (or better!). The V8 automatic also includes active fuel management. Both the V6 and V8 have a standard 6 speed manual trans or an optional 6 speed automatic with TAPshift, the driver shift controls. We also made sure that the Camaro had the right underpinnings - an independent rear suspension with standard StabiliTrak. The new Camaro is a no-excuses performer!
As I was driving to our first day of media activities where we shared the new Camaro with the journalists I had a moment to reflect and think, “Wow… the Camaro is really, truly back and it has returned in a way that is better than any one of us would have dreamed.” A truly proud moment …
