My old head unit just is not cutting it anymore. I have one of the original JVC Kameleon head units in the car now and it's served it's purpose well. But now that the car has a stroker a decent sized cam and true duals I can not listen to my CD player under load. If the car is stopped at a light or just idling anywhere I can listen to the CD player no problem, but as soon as you start to accelerate it starts skipping like crazy. I'm sure it's just because it's so old now but I can not really find anything that I like for less than $500. I really don't want to spend that much money on another head unit right now.
What I am looking for really is just something that:
-Plays MP3
-Has 3 pre-amp out puts (front, rear, sub) and at least 4volt pre-amp outs
-HD Radio built in would be nice, but not necessary
What do you suggest? What do you use? How do you like whatever it is that you use?
TIA

Quick question, what is the difference between 2.5v, 4v, and 5v preamp outputs? My DD has 5v preamp outputs and I know everything sounds really good in there, that is really my only reason for wanting at least 4v preamp outputs. I can find HUs that I like but they only have 2.5v preamp out puts, what's the difference?

Are you running amps??? If not the pre-out rating is of ZERO concern, otherwise the higher the rating the better the sound, and less interference in signal to the amp.

Yes I am running amps, lol. I have full systems in both my DD and my Camaro.

So what price range are you really looking at, $300-$400?

While most people don't use their CD players anymore very few will actually give it up. THe Alpine mentioned above is a good choice. I would look into some other Alpine models as well as Kenwood Excelon. THese should fit your needs.

Higher voltage on the preamp outputs translates to better sound quality and more resistance to interference.

Alpine CDA-9887.
:)
Eddie, I think this is the one that I just put in my Z. Has the HD radio, Ipod cable, usb cable included. It sounds great with my infinity speakers with no amp/10" sub with amp. The quality is 5x better than my previous 3 year old pioneer. I'll look at the model number tomorrow as my car is over in deltona getting body work done.
BTW, why do you even care about a sound system with how awesome your car sounds now :P
