VW set to overtake GM as 2nd largest automaker!

Get used to it ladies & Gentlemen. When the dust settles on everything, General Motors will be a lot smaller.
GM won't be much bigger (if any bigger at all) than Ford when everything clears up, so not just Toyota and Volkswagen, but potentially even Nissan-Renault has the potential of passing GM.
From a market value basis, Ford surpassed GM at least within the past year. Ford also just cut over $9 billion in debt, that sent their stock prices rocketing upward earlier this week, making the company even more valuable than GM than it already is.
GM has the potential of climbing back, and today most car companies are only a couple of bad or unsuccessful new model launches away from tumbling out of position, so no market standing is permanent.
Just the same, I wouldn't be getting too excited over other carmakers overtaking GM over the next few years as GM gets themselves together.
Let's just be thankful we still have a General Motors, and hope they finally focus on making great cars than scooping up market share and selling massive volume at the expense of everything else.... the very things partly responsible for them getting to where they are today.
We as Camaro/GM enthusiasts have to stop caring about whether or not GM sells the most cars or whether they will be overtaken by VW, Ford or anyone else. Right now we are lucky to have GM to root for. We need to be more concerned that the bulk of the GM we know and are passionate about makes it though this mess somehow and become a viable, growing company once again. GM will shrink very fast and shed brands along the way and will no doubt lose market share. If the end result is a company that can stand on its own two feet though, it will be worth it.
We were on top for many many years... we got lazy... finally after ALL these years other companies are finally over taking GM... that says a lot about how Big GM is.. now.. it time to climb back up...
when I say We I say GM.. :P

I hope GM stops focusing on volume and instead focuses on profitability. Focusing on volume led GM to have 4 different overlapping variants of the same car in almost all segments it competes in. Rather than having four mediocre to average cars, give me 2 great cars with plenty of differentiation. Use the development dollars saved on improving product. Perceived quality will go up. Do it for a decade or two and maybe GM can start luring car buyers from the import side. GM needs to stay focused on the important things.
