Cassio 03-16-2009, 03:30 PM I bought my camaro a few months back knowing that I would have to put some money into it to keep it going. When I first got it everything ran fine (the fuel pump had a loud whine but it just needed to be replaced) but about three weeks ago the car stopped working on my way home from work.
I had it towed to a mechanic after trying to figure out what it was on the side of the road and he has had it ever since. When he got it he thought it would be an easy fix and I would have my car back in a day or two. Now both he and myself are out of ideas of what could be wrong and I am trying to find a solution that doesn't involve buying a new engine for the car.
The problem (as it was explained to me) is that the driver side of the engine is receiving to much gas and can not burn it all. Every time we replace a part the engine runs perfect until its turned off. After about fifteen minutes of sitting it will start with the problem again.
We have replaced the distributer, new cap and rotor, the coils, the EGR, the sensor for the EGR, taken the fuel rail off and replaced the gaskets, all of the spark plugs, temp sensor, new fuel filter and new wires for everything.
Any idea at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
RealDealZ28 03-17-2009, 07:38 AM Fuel pressure regulator?
Cassio 03-17-2009, 08:50 PM Thanks for the suggestion RealDeal. Called the mechanic and he admitted he hadn't checked it yet and will order the part and swap it out with a new one tomorrow. Will let you know what happens as soon as I know the outcome.
Cassio 03-18-2009, 05:46 PM Update. He is going to be replacing the fuel pressure regulator today. Which is good.
Bad news is that he also found that the seal for the fuel inlet outlet (this is the name that the GM parts guy gave it) is bad and needs to be replaced. After calling around for a good hour I found out that they are discontinued. Anyone have a suggestion about where I might be able to find just the seal or even the whole kit if I have to buy that for the seal.
Cassio 03-19-2009, 11:07 PM Alright. The fuel pressure regulator did not fix the problem. They also found another vacuum leak, which the fixed, and we found the discontinued part. The bad news is that it is still not running correctly. Any other suggestions?

Could be a bad cold-start sensor. I've seen those go bad and continually dump too much fuel into the engine.
Cassio 03-23-2009, 09:41 PM Well mechanic said that it was good so still got the problem. Still no code for what might be wrong, tested the comp to see if maybe it wasn't giving a code when it should be it threw up a code right away. I wish it would just give me one for whats actually wrong...
RealDealZ28 03-24-2009, 09:36 AM What kind of fuel pump was put in the car? Specifically, what brand?
Cassio 03-24-2009, 10:05 AM Its an AC Delco.
RealDealZ28 03-25-2009, 05:42 PM I'd check the oxygen sensors next.
Cassio 03-25-2009, 10:26 PM Replaced and still no change.
RealDealZ28 03-26-2009, 07:48 PM Replaced and still no change.
It's got to be the computer. I've seen them go bad and dump one "bank" of the engine full of fuel. We had a Ford Windstar at the shop once that had similar symptoms; it actually dumped so much fuel to the right side of the motor that it was running out of the tailpipe.
Replace the computer; you can get a reman. from pretty much any major parts store.
Cassio 03-26-2009, 08:09 PM Thats actually the next step we decided on about an hour ago. I am hoping to god that this is actual the problem and I'm going to get my car back, will let you know once I get the new computer and put it in.
Thanks for all this help Real, I really appreciate it.
RealDealZ28 03-28-2009, 05:32 PM Sure thing, glad to help you out.
Any luck with the computer?
Cassio 03-28-2009, 06:12 PM Waiting for the computer to be shipped. Was suppose to be here this morning but never showed up. So much for next day shipping eh?

Gotta love next-day shipping. ;)
Cassio 04-04-2009, 09:07 PM Well finally got the new computer into the car and while it made a small change it didn't fix the problem. Going to get a new PROM for it and hope that maybe that helps (its suggested that you reflash it after getting a new computer which is $110 and I found one for $140 which means I know it'll be good)
Mechanic is convinced at this point that it must be a problem with spark or in the fuel system.
RealDealZ28 04-06-2009, 10:37 AM Let me think some more about the problem; I'm kind of out of ideas.
Cassio 04-09-2009, 01:42 PM Thank god! Mechanic went back and started to take everything apart (for the third time) and found that the timing chain had jumped. He's going to get it fixed and we are going to hope that this is the cause of the problems now.

I still wonder if it isn't a computer problem. Either way, keep me posted! :D
Cassio 04-14-2009, 07:35 PM Timing chain was not the problem... >.<
Going back to basics for the fourth time and running through everything that we can think of. Any suggestions where I might be able to find a new engine that is ready to go out of the crate? At this point I'm wondering if I would just be better off with a new engine all together...
RealDealZ28 04-14-2009, 07:37 PM I know it's not the answer you want to hear, but it'll be impossible to find a new 3.1 engine. And if the problem was with a wiring or sensor, you'd still have the same problem the minute you fired the new motor up.
