The Z/28

Okay so I know a lot of you remeber the article on motortrend about the z/28 (http://www.motortrend.com/features/auto_news/2009/112_0904_chevrolet_camaro_z28_returns/index.html) GM has everything pretty much set for the car. They just need to pull the trigger.

http://image.motortrend.com/f/features/auto_news/2009/16929811+pheader/112_0904_02l+chevrolet_camaro_ss+rendering.jpg

But of course the bailout, gas mileage and such are in the way. I'm wondering.......... could GM could sell the Z/28 by parts to a 3rd party. Then that 3rd party creates the car because then techincally GM is not selling the car, the 3rd party is. Then GM wouldn't be responsible for the car even though it was GM's idea.

I don't know of any other loop-holes. I know Ford has Saleens & Roush for the Mustangs and F-150's. But those cars (under Saleen and Roush) technically are not Fords even though most of the parts are Fords.

maybe, 89 Turbo trans AM's were built by PAS and sold and serviced through Pontiac Dealerships.
The Vin's were not Pontiac 1G2 Vin numbers, they had new vin numbers that started with 1G5

if your gonna sell parts to third party, you might as well build your own z28 for a hell of alot cheaper and maybe get more power and have whatever looks you want for it.

I was afraid of that arguement, and afriad that it would be selling out the Z/28 name.

But.... It'll still be GM's design, and there LSX. Just they won't be putting the parts together. Hey... they should strike while the Irons hot, if they wait, it could just end up as just another picture.

it could be done if GM chose to pursue a Tier 1 arrangement like they had with SLP who did the finaly assembly for the 4th gen SSs.

GM had no intentions of going that route. whether that changes in the future, we'll have to wait and see. the way things are going now for GM, who knows.

i hate to say it, but i think there is no chance for the z28 withing the next year or even 2. i would love to see this car and possibly have one. but i dont think they are going to take their chances for it. even though its already finished and ready to go, supposedly. another reason i hope it doesnt come yet, is because i would want to buy one. i wouldnt want to trade my new camaro in on it, but i would want to buy one of those too.

The last bit of that article says that one option is for GM to build the car in VERY low numbers, number each car, and then sell them at a price to ensure a profit.
That means very few cars at an exorbitant price made specifically for rich collectors.

you would think they might be price competative with the gt500. but i can understand about making it a "collector" and marking them up and selling them to whoever has the money.

If they go that route, I'd bet they'd be asking between $50K and $60K for it.

i dont see if being more than a cts-v(65,000) but i dont see it being too close to the gt500 45-50k. i would bet around 55k.

55k?, wouldn't that put it in corvette price range... That goes agianst all GM rules. Remeber the z/28 isn't a "special" edition, its a model.

$55K would be WAY too high for that car, but if it were a "limited edition" then I would agree that it would probably be somewhere in the 50's...I would take a nicely equipped Vette for that price or even for a few thousand more you could get a new C6 Z06 with all the discounts now.

Not no mo'!

And why is 55K such a hard pill to swallow? Everybody keeps bringing up the GT-500 but has everyone forgotten that the KR went for 80K! And if GM were to give the interior of the Z28 a more luxurious treatment why not ask 55-60K?

How many times have people argued which is better the Z/28 or the SS? A ton... putting this car at 55k, probobly would show that the Z/28 is better. And here at camaroz28... we like arguement

the Z/28 is not a GT500.

The z/28 is for a hip stylish man, who get all the ladies.

The GT500 is for an old bum, who hates the world, and buys the car to show off. But because no one like him, he weeps in his car.

What if they stuck the ZR-1 spec LS9 motor in the Z28, that would pretty much dignify the higher asking price and shoot the lower level Corvette theory. Not saying that they would, but honestly if it were going to be such a small production anyway, WHY THE HELL NOT!!!

The Z28 on the books is basically a Chevrolet version of the GT500. Supercharged, 500 or so horsepower V8, limited numbers, and a price that's certainly going to be at least as much as a GT500.... if we're lucky.

What you are paying for isn't a luxurous interior. It's having a unique car... and the ability to brag about having that much horsepower.

Like the GT500 to Mustang enthusiast, the Z28 on the books will be a car for long time Camaro enthusiasts who are a bit well off, and want a truely special Camaro that attracts all the attention at enthusiast events. Some guys might take it to a sporting even at a track every so often, others will park it in the garage bringing it out only on days when the tempreature is over 70 degrees and the nearest rain cloud is a thousand miles away.

In short, 95% of the 40-50% of all the guys buying the Camaro who chose the V8 engine will end up with this Z28... meaning we'll rarely see one on the streets even after it's been out a few years (IF it ever sees the light of day), just like the GT500.

It would be cool if GM were to make the thing. Personally, I hope they do.

It's a hard pill to swallow because its completly new.

If price determined quality then Mercedes would be one of the best built cars instead of one of the worst. The price of cars is exactly like the price of paintings, cheeseburgers, and labor -- supply and demand. Demand is a function of the perception of quality and well as other factors.

i dont see it hitting the 40k area. theres no way they would sell it that cheap. they know people would buy them up like hot cakes. they could put any price they want, within reason, and people will buy it. not way it would be in the 40k number. cheaper than the cts-v but more than the ss,obviously. the loaded ss is 35k+. the motor is atleast 5-7k more than the ls3. the brakes are probably a bit more extreme 2k. hood, bumper, spoiler, good 2-3k there. exhaust 1k. right there is about 13k. then any interior mods. add another 2. thats 15k more atleast.
