Ok, good news and bad news. Bad news first. I didn't get to drive it for very long :(. Good news, I got to drive it! :D
This was a base SS, 6-speed, cloth interior, minimal "fancy stuff" (fine with me). And obviously, no ambient lighting! (I'm sure someone was going to ask).
First off, it's nothing like my 2002 Z28.
Secondly, and don't take this the wrong way, driving it reminded me of my buddy's 2007 Mustang GT?! I think just the general "feel" and more notably, the clutch! (very light ... almost too light?) **BUT** ... I'm not saying that comparison is a bad thing (you may breathe a sigh of relief now).
Unfortunately, I had very little time to do my test drive, thus, I had very little time to get myself 100% "adjusted" to the car. Compared to my 4th-gen that just "fit like a glove" when I first got in, the 5th-gen will take a little bit of adapting to. But the beauty is, with the telescopic/infinite tilt steering, and the wickedly adjustable power seat (note: very comfortable and very supportive) finding the perfect driving position for pretty much ANYBODY should be easily achievable ... I just didn't have enough time to find my groove (although I got close).
One word about the car though: smooooooooooooth .
... but firm. You can still tell that you're driving a sports car. I tried to get a feel for the weight/handling, and took a couple turns at a fair speed. The car stays perfectly flat (or it certainly felt that way). The steering is GREAT too ... instantly responsive, and yet, the car tracks beautifully down the road ... no pitching or darting like my '02 (although that's also due to my car's setup). But having such little over-hang compared to the 4th-gen, the turning is immediate.
And the brakes! Oh the brakes! They're wonderful!!! The Brembo's and 14" rotors are superb!!! (and I didn't even REALLY get to try them out!!). I can see this car having great track capabilities, although obviously there won't be much overcoming the curb weight, shy of gutting the car.
The power is the one thing I didn't really get to try. The roads were nice and dry, but there's still the typical salt residue from our great Canadian winters, so traction would be very limited, and I went nowhere that I could really open it up. From what I did feel though, it felt good. As another person described, it feels much like the power of the LS1 (probably the power/weight ratio has a lot to do with it).
The exhaust note is nice, but (going back to how smooth the whole car is) it's almost barely noticable . I'd put a cat-back on my short list of things I'd want on the car (just so you can hear those ~425 ponies).
Oh yeah, and the shifter ... again, very smooth, but I'd prefer my B&M Ripper over the silky smoothness. I didn't mind the actual shift knob though. It was comfy.
Well, that's my brief (but lengthy!) report on my brief drive with the new Camaro. Fortunately, our neighbour is in a position of being able to bring these bad boys home quite frequently (probably moreso as more cars are built and available). Hopefully when the weather (roads) improve a little more, and we've got more time, I can get another chance at driving one of the cars and getting a more detailed report (and perhaps get to check out a car with the ambient lighting too :thumb: ).
97z28/m6 02-25-2009, 10:03 AM thanks buddy.
christianjax 02-25-2009, 10:07 AM Awesome review. Thanks
2010_5thgen 02-25-2009, 10:12 AM sweeeett! one thing. you say its nothing like your 2002 z...........WELL YEAH! its a totally different car. there is nothing that is has in comon with the 4th gen(except for the name)
it must have been fun. i cant wait to drive mine.

agou812 02-25-2009, 10:50 AM Was the interior tan or grey and were the door panals cloth inserts or plastic?
Capn Pete 02-25-2009, 11:34 AM thanks buddy.
Yesterday was pretty much a last-minute surprise. I was heading out for the evening, and this was a VERY quick "stop" on my way! ;) He'll continue to bring cars home, and hopefully he'll get one on a weekend soon ... that way we'll have much more time to REALLY check the thing out ... I'll call you when that happens :thumb:.
First off, it's nothing like my 2002 Z28.

:p
Yeah, yeah ..... ok, so there was this ONE similarity! :p Well, and it was also black, and a 6-speed, and had two doors .............. ;)
Was the interior tan or grey and were the door panals cloth inserts or plastic?
I believe it was the tan, not gray. The panel inserts were fabric as far as I remember. The interior was definitely more basic, but to be honest, I liked it. It's simple. Although the instrument cluster in the middle looks like it would take a little bit of getting used to ..... but what new car doesn't need to be "learned"? Although the 4th-gen center stack was pretty idiot proof/simple ;).
2010_5thgen 02-25-2009, 11:39 AM i am so excited. i ordered black 2ss/rs and seeing this makes me so giddy. its really getting closer. i cant believe this.
Capn Pete 02-25-2009, 11:59 AM Here's just a quick interior pic of a black SS/RS he had home last week:
http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/7430/newblackcamaro6.jpg
Obviously the interior is leather, but it clearly doesn't appear to have the ambient lighting.
And a yellow V6 RS:
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/5853/newyellowcamaro4.jpg
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6711/newyellowcamaro.jpg
I didn't get to see either of those cars, unfortunately. My Dad got to drive each of them, and liked both. The V6 was an auto, but he was surprised at the get-up-and-go that it had :). He said there was a noticable difference in the braking between the two ... the V6's weren't nearly as grabby as the SS's, but that's understandable. I'm guessing the V6 brakes are probably similar to LS1 brakes? (although apparently a slightly bigger rotor ... around ~12.5" vs. ~12").
97z28/m6 02-25-2009, 12:27 PM i'd love to see how well the V6 drives. its more in my price range and i know i could wait and get a SS used but i kinda want one now.....

If you look very closely at the left side of the picture, at the panel on the door. It looks like the material "covering" the panel is loose on the bottom. I think GM covered it to hide the ABL. On the other side of this, if base models ARE going to come with cloth covered panels, then it stands to reason, that those panels could easily be uncovered or recovered with another color for a more custom look at very little expense. But I'm betting that the cloth is just a mask to hide ABL.
Capn Pete 02-25-2009, 01:16 PM I'll try to find out. Likely not going to get any more info than is already available . However, if I can check out an RS package car, I'll try to pay attention to the doors and see if anything is "hiding" there ;). On the car yesterday, clearly they were plain panels, but it was the dressed-down car anyway.
2010_5thgen 02-25-2009, 01:20 PM the black ss should have the IOM door panels to match the leather. it does clearly look liek they just threw that fabric on to cover it up. if i had one of these cars i would be tearing it appart to find that ambient lighting.
99SilverSS 02-25-2009, 01:23 PM I agree that is one good reason to live in Oshawa.
Good write up. That's twice that people having driven the car say it has power/acceleration feel similar to the LS1 F-body. That's good and concerning at the same time.

99SilverSS 02-25-2009, 03:48 PM High 12s and low 13s feel pretty much the same. :)
Yea but I bet the SOTP meter would "feel" a difference if the LS3 was unleashed in an F-body.
Oh well it's all hearsay until we get our chances to drive.
islandhopper 02-25-2009, 03:48 PM Thank you very much for such a well written review. Please continue with the reviews and pics. I'm a Camaro junkie and need my fix:D
JakeRobb 02-25-2009, 04:30 PM Yea but I bet the SOTP meter would "feel" a difference if the LS3 was unleashed in an F-body.
Assuming you're talking about a 4th-gen F-body (remember, the new ones have F in the VIN too!), sure. The LS3s ~90hp advantage over an LS1 is partially offset by the 5th gen's additional weight, giving high 12's (an educated guess on my part). In a LS3-equipped 3400-3500lb 4th gen, I think you could expect low-mid 12s.
While I don't think you'd notice much difference between a 13.3 and a 12.9 as far as SOTP feel is concerned, I do think you'd notice the difference between a 13.3 and a 12.3. :)
1fastdog 02-25-2009, 04:32 PM High 12s and low 13s feel pretty much the same. :)
 If it were not true, there would be no point in checking the timeslip...
Capn Pete 02-25-2009, 04:36 PM If I ever get the chance to try one on a dry day, and CLEAN roads, I'll let ya know how she goes. I only pulled the car to (what I thought was) redline once, and the higher she pulled, like an LS1, the harder she pulled . However, I just read on the spec sheet today that redline is 6600 RPM! I think I shifted just before 6000!! :D I think there's even more in this animal than I realized ;).

Yea F in the VIN doesn't make them F-bodies, IMHO. GM's platform designations have changed since then to the Greek system so maybe we'll call the 5th Gen Zeta F or F-Zeta. ;)
That's pretty much all I was saying. For all the extra power the LS3 has and how potent it would have been in the 4th Gens we're looking at just slightly better performance potential in the 2010 Camaro.
I have no doubt that the 5th Gen Camaro will be a better overall car than the F-bodies in almost every way. But to think that it will take 420+ hp/tq to pull high 12's from a production Camaro is slightly concerning.
But with a 6600 redline 4.10's will help! :D

cmg06s 02-25-2009, 08:13 PM I hate how everyone complains about the weight!!! Who on this particular board hasn't done mods to their cars?!?!?!? Go see what headers and a simple tune will do for an LS3 and shut the hell up!!!;)

8Banger 02-25-2009, 08:36 PM So who does this car belong to? Sure a lot of Camaros popping up before production even begins.

Until March 16, the ones you see popping up belong to GM. :) They are called "Captured Fleet" vehicles.
jwlister 02-26-2009, 12:38 AM Nice review, capn pete, hopefully you'll get the chance to write some more in the future weeks!

I don't understand this line of thinking. It's heavier, so it takes more power to go a particular speed. That's physics.
The power is there, in droves. Don't want to leave it stock? The mod potential of the LS3 is even better than that of the LS1.
By all accounts, the car rides and handles far better than a 4th gen.
So what the heck are you "concerned" about?

True, from what I hear it shouldn't be hard to get 500+ hp with light mods from the LS3. Who needs the LSA Z28?
sselie 02-26-2009, 10:17 AM Hey Pete!
Glad to hear that you feel the car has some potential for enjoyment on the track! ;)

2010_5thgen 02-26-2009, 10:18 AM it shouldnt take too much to get 500hp to the wheels on this car. head cam package, headers, intake, tune....should be enough t get you to 500 i would think.

Sounds about right to me. You'll need a high-end set of heads and a big cam, though. :)

Capn Pete 02-26-2009, 01:07 PM thats why you should've called.:p
Don't worry dude, you'll get your chance ;). Tuesday night was very last minute, and a very rushed visit!
So who does this car belong to? Sure a lot of Camaros popping up before production even begins.
This car (and ones like it) came directly from the plant in Oshawa, and goes back the very next day for the next guy to take out. Right now, it's mostly managers, etc., who are taking the cars out for testing. However, as more and more of them are being built, there should be more available for testing. I don't know how far "down the line" they allow workers to take the cars from the plant? Our neighbour typically has a different Impala or Silverado every day of the week (it's basically part of a quality assurance program, to make sure that the vehicles coming off the line are being put together well). Now that the Camaro is in the mix, it will become part of the regular "fleet" of cars driven by managers for testing.
Hey Pete!
Glad to hear that you feel the car has some potential for enjoyment on the track! ;)

Hey Elie! Yeah, it's been a long time coming getting a change to try out the car. Pretty hard to gauge accurately just how well it handles from a quick drive on city streets, but the fact that I couldn't FEEL any body roll, and feeling how strong the brakes are, I'm sure it's going to work well .
..... hmmm, maybe if I fed our neighbour a few beer and slipped him a couple hundred bucks, he'd let me take a car up to Mosport for some track testing!!!
Capn Pete 02-26-2009, 01:13 PM One negative ..... I forgot to mention this about the car in my review:
Big blind spot on the driver's side . Big. And I thought that the 4th-gens had a pretty wicked blind spot as it was :(. But again, that's part of getting used to a car. I'm sure it's something you would learn to deal with, and just pay VERY close attention to who's around you at all times. But trying to change lanes to my left, when I looked, I saw NOTHING! I swung myself around backwards, I swear, and all I could see was the C-pillar .
That's my biggest complaint. A little too late to change THAT now, so I guess it's something people will have to get used to.
Edit: if you're driving with the windows down, you may want to stick your head out the window Ace Ventura style to check your blind spot ;).
MetalDragon 02-26-2009, 01:14 PM Keep a lookout for a black car with the IOM interior...I saw the picture, but I was looking for a longer shot to get the overall effect.

Public Service Announcement:
Too many people adjust their mirrors in such a way that all 3 show basically the same thing. Here's a much better way.
Adjust the center mirror centered on the rear window.
Check what you see at the edges.
Set the outside mirrors to just slightly overlap the edges of what you see in the center mirror.
You shouldn't need to shoulder check anymore. Your peripheral vision will pick up anything beside you when you check the outside mirrors.
It seems strange at first, because you don't see the side of the car at all, but as you get used to it you'll have a much better feel for what's going on around you.

Art, drive the car, and then tell me my peripheral will pick up anything beside me ;).
The "shoulder check" showed me nothing more than what was right outside my window! Obviously, mirror adjustment will be CRUCIAL in these cars.
Like I said, this is something that will take some seat time to get used to (well, at least for me ... and maybe I'm just 'special' :freakout:  ;)).

I agree. I'd say about 90% of people don't have a clue what the side mirrors are for. They wind up having 3 rear view mirrors. What's the point of that? The side mirrors are SUPPOSED to cover your blind spots. You should BARELY see your rear quarters in side mirrors. I ride a motorcycle so I'm VERY aware that people don't have thier mirrors set right, so I make a point of never riding in people's blind spots (a good idea anyway.)
Rant done.

Well, now that we've determined that I just don't know how to use my mirrors properly ;) .........
..... I'm just informing people that the shoulder check (which is done to "cover your butt" in case you don't have your mirrors set properly) is a non-rewarding waste of time, since you I can't see a damn thing when you I do it! :p
FWIW, I'm about ~5'10".

Actually, since we're slowly moving back to our roots of being British and driving on the left, passing on the right, I think that the driver's side mirror will become more and more important to us over time ;).
For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, try driving on the 401 (or just about ANY highway in/around Toronto) sometime and you'll see what I'm talking about ;).

Yes, I do feel VERY fortunate to A) "know a guy" and B) be trusted enough by "that guy" to hand me the keys and say "here ya go". For ANYBODY who's been given that opportunity, it's quite an honor, truly.
A couple fun moments on my drive:

The power is there, in droves. Don't want to leave it stock? The mod potential of the LS3 is even better than that of the LS1.
By all accounts, the car rides and handles far better than a 4th gen.
So what the heck are you "concerned" about?
No you got it. It's all physics and that is the concern.
JakeRobb 02-27-2009, 10:57 AM No you got it. It's all physics and that is the concern.
You said you were concerned that it takes more horsepower to accelerate the new Camaro.
The new Camaro is heavier, so obviously it needs more horsepower to go fast. That's physics. This hasn't changed, ever.
Why are you concerned about it?
poSSum 02-27-2009, 12:06 PM I do that sometimes too ;). The past few years, it just seems to be getting worse and worse ... more and more people DRIVING in the left (and of course middle) and leaving a virtually EMPTY right lane!? :irk: (probably my #1 pet peeve)
It's not limited to the 401. We encounter that wherever we travel. The best drivers I've ever experienced were on the east side of California .... on back roads they watched their mirrors and always pulled into the indents to let us pass.
We need to start a campaign to replace all the "Slower Traffic Keep Right" signs with "Keep Right Except To Pass" signs.

And enforce it .

cops are to busy catching speeders. or at timmys.......
MetalDragon 02-27-2009, 01:01 PM Can someone down south get the car where the roads are dry! lol
I'm about an hour south of Houston....not a whole heck of a lot of rain recently....lots of flat roads.
OK...who's going to give me the keys?

could just make it like the autobahn and make it illegal to pass on the right. forcing everyone to drive in the right lane and only the left lane for passing. if you get caught passing on the right its just like getting a speeding ticket here. except the good thing about there is, there no speed limit.
Capn Pete 03-29-2009, 06:00 PM Here are a couple pics I've snapped recently. Camaro sightings are becoming a daily occurance! I love it!! :D (although I think my fiancee is getting bored of hearing about every new Camaro that I see  ).

No problem. I really think I should start carrying my CAMERA, not just my camera PHONE with me these days! (the picture quality isn't that bad, but it could be a lot better ... I had a couple more pics of some Camaros in the yard at the plant, but they just looked like scrambled eggs on the computer screen   ).
2010_5thgen 03-30-2009, 08:07 AM my fiance is tired of me talking about them too. she is just ready for me to get my car and shut up. but what she doesnt know, is that it only gets worse once the car gets here!:)

Exactly! I've had my car for almost 7 years already, and I still go on and on about it! :D Throw the new Camaro into the mix, and I'm just a broken record of Camaro! Camaro! Camaro! :blahblah:
Ah well, it may be a sickness, but I think there are worse things to obsess about :cz28:.

T/A is fine -- lots of people call them that.
There are already two things called "tranny"... one is confusing (transmission) and the other is just plain wrong (transsexual).
