Would you guys suggest I get a scanner or just get a cable for a laptop. Also is there and free software around to use? I'm just looking for something to run diagnostics......for now :)

If all you are after is diagnostic codes, either will work fine,. If you want to log data as well, to perform your own analysis (or let someone else look the logs over), you need scan software. Do a "search" on OBD-I software for the LT1. You should turn up several of my old posts (and posts from others) with links to TTS Datamaster (free download and first 20 uses), FreeScan (free download and usage), and EFILive V4 (pay for it).

You will also need a cable, specifically for your 95's screwed up 16-pin OBD-II style ALDL connector. I usually post the link to AKM Electronics along with the software links.

If you like FreeScan you will love TTS Datamaster, worth a try for free 20 logs. TTS also gives vehicle specific DTC failures whereas FreeScan is generic OBD1.
