1997 z28 SS Cat Converter

I'm trying to get my car to pass smog but myy engine light is stuck on and according to my mechanic it needs a new CAT converter. He says he can't do it because there isnt one available and only from the dealer. He said its going to cost about $1,000 just for the PART!!! Can someone help me?? Is there a cheap place where I can get one?

How can I get this thing to pass the smog...Everything passes except the check engine light. This is BS. Theres NO WAY im paying a thousand+ bucks to replace the CAT!!!!!!

BTW i have this exhaust system

http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ca...singlecat.aspx

and i'm in cali so whatever CAT i get needs to comply with STATE smog requirements. Any help would be appreciated!

(SORRY FOR DOUBLE POST I POSTED IN WRONG SECTION!)

Try another shop...I just checked one of our supporting vendors selling GM parts, and the cat is around $500.

But before thinking about replacing the cat..find someone (probably not the shop trying to rip you off) to tell you what code is actually showing up that's keeping the "check engine" light on.

Does the car pass the sniffer, but only the check engine light is on? Meaning, the emissions levels are fine? I think that's what you're saying. Personally, I don't see how you could have a bad cat and still pass the emissions readings...I think the shops screwing with you. It's probably a bad O2 sensor or ERG valve clogged.

Get the code and tell us what it is before you spend the money.

yea thats exactly what i was thinking....the emission levels passed fine. The only thing that didnt pass was teh check engine. If i had a bad CAT then why would it pass? Im going to pick up my car from the shop tomorrow and buy a computer from Autozone and get the codes.

Cat-back means after the cats, so any system you have on there shouldn't have moved the cats. Which cat is bad? And where in CA are you? I still have my stock y-pipe, and the cats passed smog 2 years ago.
