'04 Mitsu Lancer Evo, 271hp + only 4500 units

Ok, to take a break from GTO discussion...

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
The Lancer Evolution has landed in the U.S. — finally! The price: $28,987 (without destination and handling). Not too shabby for a sedan that can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 5.0 seconds, hit the quarter-mile in under 14.0 seconds, and pull close to 1.0 g on the skidpad, according to Mitsubishi. Powering the Evo is a 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder engine that pumps out 271 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. All that power is sent to a full-time all-wheel-drive system via a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission. The fully independent MacPherson front/multilink rear suspension tackles the curves with help from sticky P235/45ZR17 Yokohama ADVAN A046 tires wrapped around 17-inch Enkei wheels. Braking power is provided by Brembo four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with four-piston front calipers and two-piston rear calipers. Mitsubishi plans to bring 4500 Evos to the U.S. in 2003, with sales beginning in February. (Source)

I posted abotu this car in the lounge. I think I'd be more apt to try to get one of these cars than a new GTO.

I don't know, but I looked at regular Lancers around here (without the ground effects), and they look so 80's - 90's in styling. I'm surprised that they're selling, they're quite ugly with tiny wheels and oversized body dumped on them.

Performance-wise, this Evo is respectful, no doubt about it, but it's ugly.

Thank you

I think it is ugly, but better looking than the WRX. Why didn't they put that powertrain in the Eclipes??? at about $30K this car makes the GTO look like a steal. lets not forget dealer markup since there are only 4500 of them

I agree. I guess the SRT-4 upped the ante; they didn't want to be outdone.

How do you figure this makes the GTO a steal? It's going to outperform it in nearly, if not all, categories and come in $2-7k cheaper. As for markup, I wouldn't be surprised if first 4-5k GTOs don't receive generous markups. I'd still like to be in line for one, or maybe an '05.

Styling is always subjective. I think my WRX comes in a bit more refined in appearance (esp. in silver and sans spoiler). It's funny--reading on some of the other messageboards they complain that the styling on this Evo looks too Pontiac.

Well this car and the GTO will both cost between $30-35K but the GTO will have quality matching $50K BMW's and the Lancer will have the quality of.... well, a lancer, wich also sell for about $13K.

As for performance the GTO should do the 1/4mi in about 13.5
Lancer about 14.0

We will have to wait a few more months to see what final #'s are for these cars.

I hope that rings true, but I think the GTO's numbers will come in a little short of what we'd like (and probably closer to 14.0 itself).

...But you have to have GT3 set in 'professional mode' for that, right?

The evolution will get to 60 in under 5 seconds and run the quarter in low 13s... its been done time and time again. If you dont believe it just look at the math. Take a comproble car, say a WRX which runs the quarter in just over 14 seconds. Add 50hp and 50 lb ft of torque along with more aggressive gearing and its easy to see this car will be no slouch.

Even if the GTO cost a little more and is slightly slower, I'd take it over the Lancer anyday. The Lancer may be fairly quick and handle well, but it still looks like a huge piece of crap, IMO. Possibly the tackiest production car I've seen, except for the Aztek (that's a given, though).

I agree. I'll just never get into the "fast econo-box" thing...

I thought these things did 0-60 in 4.3sec and the 1/4 mile in the high 12's. Atleast the *** spec Evo's did from what iv'e heard.

Low 14's with a 0-60 of 5.0 does seem a bit off.

I'll go with some others have said and opt for the GTO too given the option between the 2. The Lancer while faster is fugly.
