detroitboy 11-19-2008, 11:41 PM Is this option factory installed or dealer installed?
If its dealer installed I assume us gearheads can install it ourselves or does it demand some type of technical wizardry that needs to be done at the dealer?
JasonD 11-20-2008, 07:55 AM Dealer installed, but I am sure the car owner can do it. It does look a bit more complicated than previous shifter replacements.
2010_5thgen 11-20-2008, 09:52 AM yeah that shifter looked kinda funky. im gonna leave it to my dealer to install on mine.
350 HRSS 11-20-2008, 09:57 AM I sure hope they don't screw anything up when they are installing it...you know they will be just as nervous....I don't think I could stand to watch :D
detroitboy 11-20-2008, 10:11 AM Hmm...I might have to let them practice on someone elses first then and just add it later. Thanks....
ChrisFrez 11-20-2008, 10:22 AM This is the picture I took at SEMA:

2010_5thgen 11-20-2008, 11:55 AM yeeeaaahhhhhh...um, ill leave it to them. looks like the whole center console will have to come off or even drop the tranny out to get it in.

Oh come on, don't make it harder than it might be. :D
IIRC, the 4th gens had to remove the top of the center console, too...a couple of bolts and it was out. Not a problem.
I was under the impression that they were designing this Camaro with the aftermarket more in mind, hence the reason they are releasing their own parts.
But, we shall see! :)
nolanh 11-20-2008, 12:13 PM Why would you not let the dealer do it that way if they screw up a trim piece they have to pay for it. Where as if you do it and mess up anything you will have to fork out the cash + replacement parts for interior will probably not be available right away they usually are not.
JasonD 11-20-2008, 12:41 PM True, but on the other hand, why pay the dealer an hour of fees to do something that might be able to be done in 10 minutes with common hand tools?
Again, we will see! :)
nolanh 11-20-2008, 12:57 PM If you order the shifter when you order the vehicle there is no added fee.

Good to know! Thanks! :thumb:

Are you sure? Where did you hear this?
Seems to me that some dealers might be willing to do that, but I doubt that all dealers have that policy.
2010_5thgen 11-20-2008, 03:00 PM im pretty sure that there is no fee involved if you ordered the part with the car. i can see some dealers maybe trying to get some money from you but it should be part of the cost. especially if you are paying 380 for the shifter and can buy it on ebay or from summit for 250(example).
and i know how easy the 4th gens were, i put one in mine but that shifter just looks like a good 3 hour project.
BitchinCamaro 11-20-2008, 03:02 PM I believe if GM performance parts aren't installed by the dealer they will mess up your warranty like any part you would buy from Summit or Jegs. There is no way for them to be sure you didn't screw something up when installing it.

yes i know that if you buy something after market and not through gm that it voids the warranty. the point i was making is that in the price of the shifter, the instalation price may be included. hence the 380 from gm and 250+/- aftermarket.
detroitboy 11-20-2008, 10:47 PM Now wait a minute....from what I see on that picture is it simply a matter of cutting the shifter shaft and shortening it? I thought it was a different shift linkage package...not just a shorter shifting arm.
Obviously I don't have a picture or idea of what it looked like before and after, so I'm assuming the pic is of the "after", and that just looks like a shifter arm shortening kit.
detroitboy 11-20-2008, 10:52 PM Sorry...my last post should be deleted. I was doing other things while looking at the pic. There probably is more involved in the kit than a shorter shifting rod, but it all looks mechanical. Should be something us gearheads can install ourselves.
So when was anything installed for free at a dealer? I'll see what I can find on the corvette sites about this part and report back.

so if you buy the 21" wheels they just throw them in your car and you take them home to mount them? no there gonna do it there and not charge you becasue its part of the car. you pay msrp or any price where they are making money and they install it for you. its in the price of the item you buy. there should be no extra charges for this item to be put in. if there is take it back , get your moneyu and go buy one from a retail store for half the price and put it in your self.
Bearcat Steve 11-21-2008, 09:47 AM Gentlemen, we are talking about a shifter -- not cracking open the engine and doing a new cam and stuff. If I can do it (did on my 4th gen) -- ANYONE can!!!
nolanh 11-21-2008, 10:19 AM The fact is when it says dealer installed as I have worked for GM for 11 years the part is installed as part of the pre delivery inspection and the dealer gets paid from GM for this automatically and most of the time pdi will be done before you get there.

no one said they couldnt do it. the point was that it is a dealer installed accesory and that nothing will come out of pocket to have it put in. we werent arguing that its too hard to put in. some of us stated that we are going to leave it to the dealer to install it.
detroitboy 11-21-2008, 03:56 PM If I can build modded big blocks for my boat I can certainly install the shifter. But if it costs me near as much to buy it at dealer discount and install it myself as it does to have the dealer do it, I will certainly let the dealer do it and avoid the warranty issues.
I still hav'nt checked digitalcorvettes.com yet to try to get more info on . Hopefully later tonight...
goob3r 11-28-2008, 03:29 PM Ordered the short throw shifter with mine today. They said there will be no installation fee, just the price of the shifter. Hope that helps.
