I have a TH400 with a TCI Transbrake. I helped build this tranny with a fellow racer that has put together quite a few of these. Clutch clearances were set according to TCI for this transbrake. The transbrake functions, as does all the gears. 1-2 is very quick and hard, but the 2-3 is slow and soft. Any of the tranny guru's have an idea. If I can't get it figured out I figured I send it in to CPT or something this winter. My car has been down for a couple years now along with this tranny not being used, it was just installed for the first time a month or so ago. I am running Type F fluid in it. Any ideas?

Bill,
There's not much that can go wrong with a t-brake valve body. The TCI eliminates the accumulator, also. It's most likely something in the high gear drum area. What did you set clutch clearance at? We've found that TCI tells you to set them a little too loose. What clutch/steel set up did you use? Did the drum air check good, on assembly? It's usually a little harder to air check a t-brake drum, because of the bleed hole you drill in the drum, but you just need to make sure you didn't cut a lip seal. Next, Are you sure the drum is in good shape where the center support rings ride? Was the center support bushing in good shape? What rings did you use on the center support. We prefer the 4L80E "solid teflon", over the steel rings. Are you sure the center support to case bolt is tight?

Frank,
I'd be lying if I tried to answer most of that. It has been 3+ years since I helped with this, and it was really my first time doing it. I do remember using air to check something, but couldn't really tell you what it was. I know the drum we used was from an older TH400 because it was supposed to be stronger. Can I safely drive this thing for another month before I store it for another winter? It does shift into 3rd, it just takes a second or 3 before it does it, and when it is in 3rd it will hold WOT without slipping. Also what rebuild would this qualify as if I sent it in. You can send me a PM if you want. Looks like I know what I'll be doing with the car this winter/spring. Thanks
