They're building a $370,000,000 plant to make the motors for the Chevy Volt right here in Flint, MI

I think it may be done that way to protect ourselves. Sure it can be done overseas cheap... But what if someone does something to disrupt the production of the materials to build the engine or disrupts the plants themselves. Big Oil wins again. I think this may say just how important the volt is to our automotive future.

Seriously, if this thing is any good, it may be the next vehicle I buy. It's better last at least 10 years though. When I buy a car, I keep it til it dies.

Why is that being reported by Canadian news?

The 1.4L turbo going into the Cruze, also (may have said that in the article... I didn't read it).

Maybe you should get an IT job at that facility. I always wanted to be in IT at a car company... of course that's when car companies were doing well for themselves.:(

EDS does all of GM's crap (GM used to own EDS)

Why would you want to do IT for a car company? It would suck ass.

You'd have all your accounting and HR and all the other 'regular' people you'd have to support just like anywhere else.

Then you'd have a bunch of designers and CAD people with PITA programs like CATIA and Pro/E.

You'd have to support computer systems on the plant floor. Have you ever been in an automotive plant? Hot in the summer, cold in the winter, dirty, people with an IQ of 70 operating machines.

Plus they run Lotus Notes ;)

I guess I always envisioned myself enjoying working IT at an automotive R&D facility more than anything.

The engineers would be the only people who get to do anything 'cool'. You might get to sneak a peek a new car or part but that's about it.

If I could pick somewhere else to work I'd pick Electronic Arts, some sort of tech company, or IT for law enforcement. Go pick up computers during a raid with the DEA or search computers for evidence in other crimes.

The FBI actually has a lot of job postings right now for IT forensics guys. It'd be a really cool job... I just don't know enough about that to take the job they're posting in my area... it's for more of a senior level position.

Common Rob, IT doesnt mean everyone's doing deskside support. Although GM outsources 99% of their server/storage/network infrastructure :(

The cams are driven by chain drives which is good for low maintenance. :)
