NewsBot 08-13-2008, 07:00 PM DETROIT — According to a new video called "The Camaro Essence", the 2010 retro muscle car's influence is being felt throughout the Chevrolet lineup.
"It has an influence on everything we're doing at Chevy," said Ed Welburn, General Motors vice president of global design, who walks viewers through a quick design tutorial of the redesigned Camaro. He emphasizes that not all future Chevrolets will look like the Camaro, but says they will retain some of its spirit.

The video gives some clues about how the Camaro made it from concept to production. Welburn said he told the design team that he wanted a car "inspired by the first-generation Camaro." The result is a vehicle that he says "has the character of the concept." Welburn says the rear quarter of the production vehicle is "one of my favorite areas — very strong, very powerful."
"My car looks so old next to this new car, and that's the way it should be," he says in summary.

Here too. His genuine enthusiasm for his job, particularly with regard to the Camaro, is refreshing. The industry could use more like him.

I think he already has his hugging activities directed elsewhere...

JeremyNYR 08-14-2008, 12:13 PM Ed rules. After reading so much negativity on here about what people might not love about the new Camaro, it's refreshing to see someone so excited and positive about how great the car really is. I have to say that I think it's the most beautiful Camaro ever made. It SCREAMS Camaro! I may not love the dash design, but the exterior is absolutely stunning, its power is incredible (especially the V6!!!) and fuel economy is very impressive. I also have to agree with Ed that the new car really makes the 1st gens look old in comparison, and that's a good thing. The Challenger doesn't really do that... it's too similar to the original.
That is the one thing I was unprepared for and struck by... the new Camaro makes a 69 look like an antique (which it is but you know what I mean).

So is that the silver ice metallic or cyber gray? Are the stripes going to be an option? I want mine to be just like that one.

You mean the unbadged SS with Z28 stripes?
The enthusiasm and passion that Ed shows everytime Ive heard him speak brings a smile to my face. I cant help but think that, if I were in his position, that is the exact way I would feel. Makes me happy that people like him are still around in the industry.
99SilverSS 08-15-2008, 01:04 AM Nice video. Ed is a great design chief for GM. These are different times then when Harley Earl presided over design staff. It's not so easy anymore and the competition is far fiercer. From a styling perspective the Camaro seems to be a hit. Some small issues but a hit.
I like when they show just a part of the kind of work that goes into designing and building a car. It's an amazing process.
Gripenfelter 08-15-2008, 01:00 PM Is it just me or was there one Camaro in there with a single side of the hood raised up like a 3rd gen T/A?

MasterEvilAce 08-15-2008, 01:41 PM Yes, that was in there, HOWEVER.. it was because they were showing two different designs... One side of the car being different than the other.
For the hood it looked like they were trying to decide how big to go with the cowl scoop thing.

Yes it does. But what they are doing there is dividing up the clay model down the center and making some changes in surface so that both can be judged next to each other. It's an easier way to see changes and since many clay models are only halves anyway it saves time and cost.
