STEEP gearing

The transmission in the Camaro look like they were designed for very quick launches. However, the tires are taller than most people here are familiar with. The Camaro now uses 28 2/3" tall rear tires!

The T6060 SS has a steeper 1st gear than any other 6 speed V8 transmission that I've seen in a GM vehicle. 3.01:1 with 3.45 gears in the back is a good combination. At the 6600RPM redline, that is 54mph. That surprises me since it is going to hurt published 0-60mph times.

Yeah; I think it would've been optimal to make gearing such that 60 MPH could be achieved in 1st gear, like 'Vettes, for better 0-60 times. However, this is nothing too bad. But hey, think about how many cars you see at the track running 20-inch wheels and such. Maybe their thinking was if a person is going to optimize the acceleration, they'd throw on some shorter wheels/tires instead of running these babies.

Did anyone notice that there are going to be 21-inch black and chrome accessory wheels? That's cool too! I just hope that the lug nut pattern is the same as the 4th. Gen. so my MT DRs will fit.

It's going to be rare to see 5th Gens at the track wearing anything shorter than 20" wheels since they've got such HUGE brakes on the back.

I betcha people will be converting to the V6 rear brakes on the SS models just so they can run shorter 17 or 18" wheels!

Nitto already makes a 275/40R20 drag radial. They've also got 305/35R20 drag radials. Those are the only 20" drag tires that I can find.. There is a much better selection in 17" and 18" sizes though.

How is the gearing going to affect the auto. Will it help the 22HP deficit the auto has compared to the manual?

there's no way to tell at this time. multiply the first gear ratio by the final gear ratio though and you'll see that the auto should launch better than the stick.

Does anybody make an aftermarket torque converter for the 6L80E yet?

yeah, I'm not too thrilled about this L99,
my A4 fourth gen gets pretty decent mileage
so I wish I would have option to get the ls3 with the A6, that would be an awesome combo!
'cause with "an estimated 400hp" and all that weight to carry around it doesn't sound like it'll be any quicker than my 02.

Is the only reason for the L99 the active fuel management system?

I know with the gto you'd get hit with the Gas Guzzler tax if you bought an automatic, but not the 6 spd. Maybe they wanted to avoid being classified as a gas guzzler all together???

it's pretty much the same engine...just called a L99 because of the AFM, which you can only use with the auto tranny. The M6 will have skip-shift to improve MPG and hopefully shed the gas guzzler tax.

How could the gearing be altered to increase first gear to 60mph & how would that affect top end speed & acceleration?

Huh?
If you wanted to be able to hit 60mph in 1st gear, then change it from a 3.45 to something like a 3.08 or numerically lower. A 2.93 or 3.00 gear would make it safer. However, it would hurt acceleration, but potentially help fuel economy.

Would that explain why they are going with a lower 6th gear ratio of .57 as opposed to the .50 they were using for quite awhile?

no, that's just the gear ratio that transmission has. the GXP is using the same transmission and those specs were released a while back now with the same ratio's.

The automatic L99 Camaro's will be FAST. With 4 drive gears instead of 3, a setup trans with a shift kit/stall and some gears in the rear and they will be seriously fast cars before you even touch the motor. I'll say mid 12's.

Anyone notice the 6-Speed Manual in the SS gets raped on gearing vs all the other trims?

You can always wait for the 2011s and get 3.73s.
