Ed Blown Vert 12-25-2002, 04:28 PM But what should I do? I want to keep the car reliable, keep drivablilty and smog legal because it is my daily driver. I want something that will give me at least 400 rwhp. But nothing I have to mess with all the time.
1. ATI Procharger
2. Head/Cam
Drew778/94Z 12-25-2002, 04:42 PM Direct port nitrous system, it's going to be hard to stay smog legal.
I'm still running my stock manifolds and cats.
pkincy 12-25-2002, 05:35 PM You can spend forever debating NA, or Huffer or Gas. So I will only refer to NA.
It will cost you close to $5K to do heads, cam, LS6 intake, LTs, custom YPipe w/cats, LS1edit (for smoggability) if you do the work yourself. But you will have a car with good driveability and smoggability (if you get someone to skip the visual on the relocated cats).
I am awaiting the heads and have everything else waiting on the Installapalooza!
Ed Blown Vert 12-25-2002, 05:51 PM Forgot my sig, but I am already doing the N20. I want to have a bit more power on demand and not have to refill the bottle so often.
LT's are not an option because they will not pass smog.
My84Z 12-25-2002, 06:19 PM first a 12 bolt then nitrous or just a cam don't waste your money if your not gonna get a 12 bolt cause if you spend all you money and your rearend goes boom your gonna have a modded car that just sits there.
SpecForceZ28 12-25-2002, 06:38 PM first get a good rear end then if u have enough supercharge! :D
PhantomTA 12-25-2002, 06:50 PM if you ONLY have 5k.. your goin to spend a lot more thtan 5k on a blower with install and tuning...
head cam headers would be the way id go
Flat_Tire_ 12-25-2002, 09:15 PM Will LT's really not pass emissions testing in CA? I would think that as long as your cat's are functioning you wouldn't have a problem. What am I misunderstanding? What about passing emissions in Idaho with LT's, anyone know?

They should pass the sniffer, but LT's move the Cat's back. And that won't pass visual.
Flat_Tire_ 12-25-2002, 10:04 PM Gotcha. Thanks.
PhantomTA 12-25-2002, 10:30 PM Steve at TTS sells long tubes in cali.. with cats..
appearently they pass
pkincy 12-26-2002, 12:37 AM LTs are illegal in all states. Notwithstanding that, you generally can sneak them by the visual, so you are good to go if you can sniff OK. Now in states with State Emissions Stations I would not chance it, but with contractor stations, the operator normally doesn't know or doesn't care.

Raph8erxxx 12-26-2002, 01:29 AM The key here is to become friends with the guy doing the visual inspection. Buy him a pizza and a six pack or something.
:)
Flat_Tire_ 12-26-2002, 01:34 AM Hahaha good idea Raph8erxxx. I ought to also find a new inspections guy ... last one I went to wasn't too friendly.
stik6shift98 12-26-2002, 02:04 AM nitrous with addons and install.....1k
bmr subframe conectors... torque arm....springs....rear control arms....1k
thats 2 k well spent
or get ati procharger..for 5k installed
chuck 12-26-2002, 07:27 AM Another vote for heads/cam.
GrdLockV6 12-26-2002, 12:12 PM I'd spend it to move out of CA so you can do some real mods :D :D
Between the choices provided though, I'd go with heads/cam/accessories. Supercharger is too much to worry about unless you have an already beefed up engine. Plus it's more impressive when you hear "450rwhp all engine" rather then "450rwhp supercharger" IMO :P
Loudmouth LS1 12-26-2002, 01:16 PM I'd have to say:
1. 12-bolt, do this before anything else, cause like everyone said, when the stock 10-bolt brakes, all that power don't do you no good when you can't use it.
2. All boltons
3. Heads/Cam if you can still afford it, if not, just cam and upgraded valvetrain, and you can add the heads at a later date.
This is the way I would do it if I had that kind of money to start with! Which I don't, so i'm gonna do the power **** first and then save for the 12-bolt and pray I don't snap the rear!!!! :D
96SFLZ 12-26-2002, 10:43 PM I agree with H/C, they'll fit into your budget and the car should still be pretty reliable. 400rwhp shouldn't be a problem either. Although, not having LTs will make it a little tougher.
A blower would be nice and it would definitely push you well over 400rwhp but it's going to cost quite a bit more than 5k after install and tuning...and you could throw reliability out the window...the motor may last a week or a year.
Ed Blown Vert 12-26-2002, 11:18 PM I also want to keep driveablilty. Sounds like H/C are the way to go. Thanks guys.
Think U Can 12-27-2002, 11:12 AM If you go the heads/cam route you wont be able to use a monste cam.I would do with the TR224 cam.Make sure you get it on a 114 LSA so you will not have to do much (if any) tuning. You definately need headers. If LT's are a problem you can get Mac's with cats or even shorties.Without headers on a H/C car it will be choking itself.
Heads/cam,springs,PR's,retainers,headers will be over 5k though even if you install it.Then you have to worry about your rear and the clutch. So with all of these mods I am guessing you will spend around 8 grand UNINSTALLED! Oh yeah did I forget the suspension? Also you needs tires...The list never ends.I am finding that out now. Something new comes up and I just tell Mikey to put it on my tap...

I have most of the suspension and tires. I would post my sig again, but I don't want to be chewed out by the moderator.
I actually have been looking at this cam
"Thunder Racing Custom Split Pattern Camshaft for Nitrous/Supercharger applications- 224/227 .563/.569 114 LSA (This cam will check in the 226 range on the exhaust lobe.) 2200-6800 RPM Power Band. Excellent mid-range & high RPM power. Automatic cars require computer tuning and it is recommend for optimum results on manual transmission cars. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended. "
Which I think should be streetable. Thanks!
