How low can you safely go with the stock rear end before it might break?

I've been mid to low 1.5x (average 1.55, best now of 1.51) with mine still running a stamped steel cover. Mine has Moser axles, Tru-tracker posi and 3.73 gears.

Weight seems to kill them once your making power.

I have my 9" already built ready to go in.

I guess I was wondering if you can hook 1.7-1.8`s on a stock rear without breaking it?

the rear end lasts along as you dont "load" it up to much.
Its the initial shock that does it, the pieces become out of alignment due to the stress and this is when u start breaking stuff.
It all comes down to launching style, if u try to dead hook then you are going to break stuff, learn to launch ur car "aggressively".

I pulled 1.8s 60's with my 96 Z-28 with the stock GSCs. As you might imagine, I was not dumping the clutch. Any amount of dumping the clutch the tires would just light up. The rear should hold until you start putting DRs or slicks on.

i was pulling 2.1 all night then snapped my axle... each launch is different... you launch your car, you take the chance of snapping it. i know people that can pull a 1.6 on the stocker and live, but i personally saw MINE break eith stock power and a new clutch... basically.. if you cant afford a rear end rebuild... dont race the car...

Dont forget that a manual transmission is also harder on the axle than an automatic transmission that is in gear. A light foot on the gas to bring the revs up a little and another on the brake will keep the gears lashed together in the differential, and then when you launch, theire is much less shock on the axle. When you dump from neutral in a manual transmission, the shock loading on the teeth is much, much greater.

Id say once you break into the 1.5's, your taking the chance (with an auto). my 3:73 broke after hitting 1.57 60foot one time. but to be fair, my rear was very used when I got it, then I beat it in my iroc first for a few years, then my 383 95Z for a few years. my stock rear lasted lots of 1.6'S and has 70K miles on it. so thats why I base my opinion on low 1.6's being the thresh hold with an auto. with a stick, forget it.
dan's idea is a good one, and should "help" but still wont be like an auto launch. if you got a stick, you could try raising the rpms against a line lock, then letting the lock go at the 2nd yellow. you'd still have to double clutch it cause a line lock isnt goin to hold much rpm ofcourse.

If you have a good diff, then with an auto 1.6's should be pretty safe imo.

Yeppers, I ran many years with my 10 bolt/a4 combo clear down to mid 1.5s.

Anything lower than 1.6's starts to become a crap shoot. Especially once you have gears in it.
