GM also said Monday it will run a sale June 24-30 to help clear out high inventories of 2008 pickups, sport utility vehicles and larger cars. The sale includes zero percent financing for up to 72 months.

Most 2009 models are getting additional standard equipment like Bluetooth and OnStar (though I realize many don't want the latter) which probably contributes somewhat.

The price of every car is going to go up. not just GM...the price of steel went from $350/ton in March to almost $800/ton in June...and what are most cars made of????? Steel!

Its inevitable...no OEM can absorb a hit like that

I think that the quoted 3.5% jump is extreme. They even quote Chryslers increases as a 2% avg.

But it isn't the same thing. The cars have new or upgraded features (pretty much across the board) as well as many improvements in power-train and fuel economy.

I understand there are minor upgrades. They are still the same basic vehicle. Regardless... in today's economy with pathetic auto sales, even on an improved vehicle, a GRAND average is a GIANT jump in price................. IMO, of course.

Hmmm.. after some digging here between work, I found this that is kinda interesting. I'd have to be able to accept the 3800 and 4 speed auto though. I also kinda wanted something with AWD.

Ultimately a Cadillac STS V6 AWD would be perfect... but I dont think I am willing to drop that kind of cash. An AWD SRX is actually cheaper than the STS, and probably even more versitile, but it has that love it or leave it look to it.

Also considering a Silverado/Sierra, but they get pricey real fast too if you load them up.

That's pretty much the main reason I bought a late '08. For what I got, the '09 equivalent would be EXACTLY the same mechanically, but w/ a price increase. I'm gonna keep it so long, I don't expect that the earlier depreciation will factor in at all.

Wish I knew what their average vehicle price is. If it's $25k, then that's a 4% increase. Inflation is normally about 3.2%, so it's not much more than inflation assuming a $25k average price (which I don't know is accurate)

I agree with the price increase for steel, but it's more than the steel - prices are up on everything. You do know what the basic constituent of all plastics is don't you? They are petroleum-based which means crude oil! Even things like glass (which have not seen much increase in raw materials) have elevated costs due to the fuels needed to heat the ovens that make the glass, etc. It's hitting us from every side. Oil is more tied into our daily lives than we think.:(

Ouch! I'll have to scan the trade magazine at work to see if Michelin is gonna have another big increase in price, I think in the past 2 years they've already adjusted thier prices based on raw materials 3 times now.

Indeed, referencing Michelin again, on average, a tire consumes a barrel of oil to produce and deliver (chemicals, fuel, power, ect). This gets interesting when you consider there are forces at work trying to increase the minimum functional tread depth of a tire from 2/32" to 4/32" with most passenger tires coming in at around 10-11/32"s in total tread depth thats certainly going to exasperate things if it comes to pass.

I believe Bluetooth is going to require higher models. 2LT/SS type models will get it.
