Want to paint my car...
Want to paint my car...
Well I love the burgundy Camaros, but I like the look of a black sports car, so I believe I will be repainting mine between the summer school sessions in a few weeks. I've never done it before, and I've searched for it on several forums, seeing people say its easy and people say its hard. All I'd really like to know is the process for prepping, and the tools required to carry out the whole process.
Here's my list so far:
Paint, primer, clear coat, sealer, auto paint spray gun with different tips for primer/base and clear, air compressor (how big? 33 gallon big enough?)
Sanding blocks, tape/paper materials, mixing materials
Gloves, respirators, safety glasses
So I really need to know how much of the paint, primer, sealer, and clear I'll need, and what the process is for prepping the car; how far down do I need to sand? I've seen different processes for how to go about it, but would like to know the professional's opinions... Is it possible to use an electric sander for the larger areas of the car, or is it best to just use sandpaper and sanding blocks for the whole process? And how far away do you hold the gun from what you are painting?
I've got plenty of time to do the job, and would like to hear anyone's suggestions or tips on how to do it all right, but please don't just say that I shouldn't paint it myself with no previous experience....this is a great excuse to get more tools and some good experience.
Thanks in advance.

well it is a 2000. you've got a gift. lol j/k
I bought it about 6 months ago from my dealership and obviously got all the engine work done and would like for it to look nice too; i really like the burgundy color on it, apparently its not appealing to most, but there is a small amount of damage that was repaired quite poorly on the left quarter panel and that whole panel is also basically spidercracked looking... Aside from that the spoiler has nasty scratches from where I was removing the cracking racing stripes (I've got the replacement SS style one in my room) and the stripes are horrid looking on the hood as well. Along with all the other small scratches throughout the car, I'd just like to get it repainted a color that I think looks awesome on Camaros...
And yea I know that black is a very bad color for keeping clean, but I usually ride my motorcycle to save gas anyway; I'd like to quality of paint to match the quality of performance, and right now it just doesn't.
If anyone has any suggestions feel free to comment.
