T56 Removal - 95 Z28 (So Close, Bell Housing Hiting Tunnel)

I bought a camaro friday night and the trans messed up saturday morning. ahh. oh well, its a project car anway. So I am working on pulling the trans.

My first plan was to remove the trans from the bell housing. Then I realosed how hard it would be to get those bolts from the top (Didnt even think of using long extensions from the back of the tranny) But I decided to put those bolts back in and to take the bell housing off (since I want to replace the clutch to anyway). So I got everything disconnected from the trans and the clutch throw out fork disengaged and it so close to coming out. but its hitting the tunnel

I read that you can jack the front of the engine up to put it at a little more angle and then it will just clear.

my question is, should I remove my jack stand (and wood) holding the back on the engine up?.. I would have to in order to lift the front and have the back come down. do I not even need to support the rear of the engine?..

alldata tells me I have to, but even then I took the stand out and let it hang it did not come down much.

so should I remove the jack stand and then jack up the front of the engine a bit. where should I jack on the front?

i've pulled mine out both ways without jacking the engine at all, disconnect all elecrical, torque arm, trans brace, driveshaft, shifter, and the bolts although I think is easier to remove the trans to bellhousing bolts and pull it vs the bell housing to engine bolts, you also have to remove the starter and shield to pull the bell housing

I didnt know I need to remove the started, but yea. makes sence. theres a shield behind it.. DOH.. ok. so I will be removing the starter in the morning..

oh, also. is there anything else i need to remove from the tranny itself. I got 3 or 4 electrical conectors.. But there feel like a vacuum line or hydrolic line on top.. whats that?

vent line, it is attatched to 1 of the trans to bell housing bolts.

Don't forget to pull the clutch fork off the T/O bearing.

I already pulled the fork down..

So since im pulling the bell housing also, I dont have to worry about the vent.

I support the T56 trans with a rolling floor jack, remove the trans tail shaft mount, then, pivot the engine on a down angle. Remove the trans first, then the bell second. I could not remove the T56 with the bell attached. The T56 is a heavy piece. I made a fixture (wood material) for the T-56 trans the mounts to the rolling jack, so, it will roll rearward easy.

Also, I think that re-assembly can be difficult when attempting to align the main shaft bearing, clutch spline, and bell dowel pins. I use the clutch to pull it forward and align. I've had my trans out 3 times. Hope this helps. B. (97ss 383 - D1 - M6)

OK. I got it out.

I could not for the life of me get it out with the bell housing attached. however I did not ever have to remove the starter or any part of it. there was a space in the bell housing that went over it and it never got caught there.

Anyway. Thanks for the help. gettin the top 2 were not nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

So now for the inspection part. I really hope there is no damage that a $200 rebuild kit cant fix.

I was gettin ready to pull the trans appart and I notice this on a orange sticker

"Exchange program do not disassemble call technical support"


anyne know anything about that?

that was for warranty service back in the day, I would seriously get a manual if you are going to disasseble it unless you are familar with them, I know there is also a special puller for either 5th or 6th speed gear I can't remember off hand. there might be tricks around the special tools but I haven't messed with them much, just clutch jobs.

I have a manual, and I have it appart and I found my problem..

thanks for the info on the sticker.. I kinda figured it was not in effect any more.. I wanted to rebuild it myself anyway.. makes me love the car that much more..
