Counted Out 05-17-2008, 04:12 AM So the clutch I had on my car (Spec 2) was supposed to only have a few thousand miles on it; this was "confirmed" by the person who sold me the car, and even the owner who had the vehicle before him (found him on LS1Tech) but tonight I finished it off. It was right after my first burn out - I had to be pushed out of the pre-staging lanes.
So I read the sticky on clutches, and it seems to be a good idea to buy the clutch kit from AutoZone and switch the disk. But I have a few questions.
Is #NU31265 the correct part number for the clutch kit?
Does it still have the lifetime warranty?
I will soon be adding a CC503 to my car and I should be putting down about 350RWHP but I'm not sure where my shift point will be. What is a good clutch disk for that situation?
Thanks for the help guys.
P.S. - Picture for enjoyment.

Jon94Z 05-17-2008, 06:58 PM That is the correct part number, but I don't know about the lifetime warranty. I bought the clutch kit and am currently running the PP from it with a McLeod single disc and autozone flywheel. I haven't had a chance to put many miles on it but it all went together ok and the few times I've given it the beans it's held well. I have a few pictures I can email you if you'd like to see it.
fireman 05-17-2008, 07:04 PM You're lucky thats all that broke, that car has been flogged pretty hard.
Get a RAM Powergrip, thats what I got and its great.

Isn't the McLeod disc only good to 5700RPM? Mite be a little low for the new cam.

You've seen this car before? PM sent.
Mtxz453 05-19-2008, 10:00 AM not to high jack the thread, but after reading the sticky, can you re use the stock pressure plate and flywheel (getting it re surfaced) and just get a new disk to make it stronger? because the sticky said that the LT1 and LT4 pressure plate were almost identical.
ENRKyle20 05-20-2008, 03:09 AM I am quite intrested also. I am in the same shoes. I have the trans out and my clutch slips a little. I want to put a nice strong clutch in there.
so is stock pressure plate the best?.. same as autozone pressure plate?.. does the stock one wear out and not clamp as hard >?
what is a good disk to get?
Thanks

The Autozone clutch is the same LT4 pressure plate you can get from GM for a lot less. The Autozone disk is a very similar OEM organic disk you can get from GM for a lot less but is best for bone stock applicatios. The pressure plate is the exact same pressure plate as Spec, Centerforce excluding the weights, SLP excluding the holes and even Mcleod, zoom etc. In fact Spec just paints them blue, throws a sticker on them and jacks them $200+. The best thing about the Autozone clutch is the lifetime warranty. Guess what, the Autozone TOB is the same too.
There are only 2 pressure plates in existence for LTx cars. The LT1 plate fingers are ribbed and the LT4 fingers are flat, they even share the exact same casting number on the surface of the PP. I am personally not convinced that the LT4 plate is stronger, I have a LT1 plate that has 10#+ more pressure than my SLP plate. You can even have your stock pp resurfaced as a cheaper alternative.
http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r6/wrd1972/Picture078.jpg
All aftermarket clutches have the exact same LT4 pressure plate right down to the casting number period, they are all made by Valeo or a Chinese knocker. I once saw the chinese knock-off, it had no Valeo logos at all, it came from Advance Auto Parts and even looked better than the valeo. Most of the current Valeo PP's have rough finish and flashing that makes them look bad, bt this is only cosmetic.
There is absolutely nothing anyone can do to beef-up or strengthen these pull type pressure plates, they are what they are. The key to stronger clutches lies in the disk, the aftermarkets makes their own custom disks out of organic, ceramic, Kevlar etc. I had a local clutch maker make me a dual friction composite asbestos/Kevlar disk for my ride, it grabbed good and engaged buttery smooth when I was making 300 RWHP. Now I am much closer to 400 RWHP and I get a bit of slipping when I beat on it.
As for the disk, here is the one I'm looking at:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=CTF%2D381039&N=700+4294908216+4294924761+4294840140+4294889104+ 115&autoview=sku
ENRKyle20 05-20-2008, 03:50 AM so are you going to replace your pressure plate?. do they wear out?.. I have looked at mine but I bet its all burned.. if so I will replace it with a autozone one. then get a disk
that disk is not agressive enuff for me (might be enough for you). I want a 4/6 puck. something that will hold 600hp. how much hp you pushing?
like this

but I want just the disk..
do you think thats the same pressure plate as autozone?
Thanks

Not sure if they wear out, but they come in every clutch kit so I'm guessing it's something that should be replaced.

Spec's are a risk in my opinion. I had a Spec 2 die out after 3,000 miles. But then again others have been known to use them up to 40,000 miles.
How much HP does the Centerforce disk hold? I coudln't find it anywhere. With the new setup I should be around 350RWHP but I need something that will hold strong to 500 just in case I decide to get juice. In the description of the Centerforce disk it says this, "These discs are designed to withstand the loadings from high-horsepower engines, but are priced for the everyday driver as well," so I figured they would hold a pretty decent amount of HP.
do you think thats the same pressure plate as autozone?

Probably the same.
ENRKyle20 05-21-2008, 11:14 AM Yea, im sure pressure plates wear out, its some kind of spring metal. So I will be using the autozone pressure plate
I never heard anything bad or good about spec's.. but I will see if I can find some reviews.. I dont want it going out after 3K miles..
I do know exactly how much the Centerforce clutch holds, but if you look at the description of EVERY Centerforce clutch on that site it has the exact same description. I dont know if I want a puck clutch or not. they chatter and are hard to drive on the road and are hard on the flywheel, I want to find a non puck clutch that can hold 550HP, but I dont think thats going to happen
Mtxz453 05-21-2008, 03:04 PM well supposedly in that previous post you can just get your pressure plate resurfaced, which is what i'll probably do along with my flywheel, this way all i have to do is buy a stronger disk.
The highest HP rating that I've seen for a clutch is the street twin 64022-1A-07, I believe they had it rated to 450HP. However in real life anything close to 400HP (+/-) it's a crapshoot ;).
ENRKyle20 05-21-2008, 08:57 PM so what clutch would you recomend for a 400ho stroked Lt1 that will see 150ish shot of nitrous from time to time. It will be driven mostly on the street.

I have a similar question.
Looking to have about 350RWHP but a 150 shot is definitely a possibility in the future. I'm going to get the autozone kit, but what plate should I get?
ENRKyle20 05-26-2008, 12:14 PM Theres got to be peope pushing 500 hp threw a clitch, what clutch do you use?

Great deal, or crappy Ebay-Brand Product? You tell me.
ENRKyle20 05-27-2008, 02:19 AM well, we know the pressure plate is good. there is only one right?..
So I took a $100 gamble. I would have bought the clutch kit at autozone for $200 and thrown the disk away. but I took a chance. If I get it and it works out great, if it slips and sucks. well Im out the $100 disk. I will report back and we will know how junk it is.. lol
so, I bought the yellow one, I can clearly see that its sprung, where in the picture of the other on I cant tell, plus the person I bougth it form say 550hp and torque, the other one says 450hp 550 torque.. Well, its worth a shot. I will let you know!

For $50 more you can get the Kevlar version which may be a little more streetable.

Sorry, the link I posted was for information on the red clutch, not the yellow one.
ENRKyle20 05-27-2008, 02:28 AM Meh. im not to worried about streetable.
That first one is not going to require a big drop to get it going is it?.. I dont need to be WOT or spinning the tires at evey launch do I?
Thanks

I wouldn't imagine it would. I'm guessing it's just a little loud or rough.
I've found a couple threads on "Ebay Brand" Clutches, haven't found a real complaint yet. I'm probably going to check out the Mad Dog Kevlar clutch and see it if will hold on the new setup.
ENRKyle20 05-27-2008, 02:32 AM well cool. a hundred bucks saved in the clutch is $100 for beer, that will help get me threw the build..lol

I only have 2 or 3 more things to order and I will be ReAdY to build!

Good luck. Let me know how that clutch works out for you.
If you don't have any problems, I'll probably order one for myself after I get done putting in the new cam.
ENRKyle20 05-27-2008, 02:37 AM will do. It will be about a good few weeks before I am ready for my first startup. then I need to break it it, but I will keep you posted.
slomarao 05-28-2008, 01:38 PM pretty much all of you guys should be fine with the mcleod single disc. If your over 450rwhp than i would get the twin disc.
I would not take my chances with a spec. I have heard and read too much negitive stuff to buy one.
Ram is another story tho.
Counted Out 05-28-2008, 05:57 PM Just talked to Centerforce, got this response.
Good Morning Jeremy,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you.
You have two options for a 1993 LT4 if you chose to use one of our disc, I will give you the part numbers and the break down.
1) 381039 = This is comparable to an OE disc (we use it on our CF I) recommended for street use with mild upgrades.
2) 23381039 = This is our DFX disc (sprung hub 6 paddle disc) recommended for vehicles making between 450-900hp. This disc will not be as user friendly as the stock disc but will hold the power.
Please feel free to call to talk to one of our tech people or myself (800) 932-5882. Make sure you resurface the flywheel regardless of the clutch manufacture.
Best Regards,
Will Baty

It's slightly cheaper at Summit (seems like everything is) and I'm pretty sure Shon Herron (Herron Performance) will even beat that price, or at least match it.
