Today, for the 3rd time, my distributor went. Everything is factory spec. My 1st replacement (rebuilt) HEI distributor lasted about 8 months, then stopped working. #2 lasted half that time, and took a dump in the middle of running my new motor for the 1st time. I had to go to the parts store in the middle of it to get another one. It seems as the rotor, or whatever you call it inside that spins, burns out, and doesn't line up with those little point shaped connectors anymore. The car will try to crank, it will put out a little spark, then just quit. The distributor is then shot forever. Is there anything that is wrong with the car that is killing all of them? I know rebuilds are piles of crap to begin with, and I know some people who have had abotu 5 alternators, all rebuilds, all crap out, but I think because the same thing happens each time, there is something wrong here that is killing my distributors, and I don't think a new MSD HEI kit and distrubotr will cure it. I sure as hell don't want to spend $250 on a new distributor and have them keep blowing up.

You need to find out what part is failing. The rotor does not go out of phase, that is a funciton of the cam gear and timing. If you have a weak spark, it could be that the rotor is burned through, the module has failed, or the coil has failed. You need not buy a distributor when only one part has failed. Many of the HEI distributors have a lot of end play. That may lead to poor timing quality and premature rotor wear. MSD makes a good quality module for the GM HEI unit. You may try that. Also, make sure that the engine has a GOOD ground. good luck

i agree on the ground deal.
i take it these weren't new dist's but rather reman's?
i'm so`so about the quality rebuild on them,, however for three to go.... Hmmmm
are you also using the correct color coded ignition coil?
BOP has on color, Chevy has another, same goes for the modulator inside the disty.

Hmm.........I found out that the modules keep crappping out. These are rebuilds, in another week or so, I will get a high performance one. Until then, I have my old distributor, and I will try to get the coil replaced, as well as that grease they put in between the module or whatever. It IS possible that all these reubilds are junk; maybe the grease they used on them dried up after sitting on the shelf. I am pretty sure these distributors are correct for my application. I didn't know modules had different colors. The module on this is white, with a green and a black ground wire inside I think.

Be shure to put some of the silocone paste on the metal part that mounts to the dist..Otherwise it will overheat and crap it out..
