Sorry, I know it is not the place, but a buddy asked for help.

He's got a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix.. (not sure which version... not sure it matters?)

He's been quoted HIGH prices to put new shocks/struts on all 4 corners.. ($1400)

Does this thing have "struts" up front? Is it common/easy to swap just the strut part?... I presume a spring compressor and a similar procedure to what we do on 4th gen f-bodies?

Does this thing have springs "over" shocks on the back (like our 4th gen f-bodies), or are they "struts" too? What is the basic R&R instruction for the rears?

Thx

$1400 sounds like what a dealer would charge for labor for that job.

I called my mechanic, who I trust. He said they usually estimate 1.5 hours of labor per corner to R&R the struts on a Grand Prix, and they usually come in a bit under. You'd probably end up getting billed for 5 hours. They charge $65/hour, which comes out to $325 in labor.

Your friend could drive to Michigan and have my mechanic do the work, and he'd spend less than the estimates he's getting down there.

He also said that the Grand Prix has struts at all four corners.

Confusing - The 4th Gen F-Bodys do not have any "struts" at all. The fronts are "coil-over-shock", but the rear suspension is not "coil-over" anything. Fronts and rears on the GP are McPherson struts.

Actually, the rears are Chapman struts. The wheel has to be driven for it to be a McPherson strut.
