02 LS1 Cam Question

What is the best cam to use to make the most power on a stock motor, with full exhaust.

Very broad question.

How streetable do you want it?

As big as i can go without putting to big of a cam in because i dont want to do head work right now. I was just wondering because i figured somebody else has a stock LS1 they just put a cam in and made good power. Thanks.

Sounds like the makings of a great dyno queen.

I believe that the majority of the people that do this mod over-cam their engine. Personally I believe that a cam in the low 230's on the intake is a big as you should go on the stock engine. 2 shelf cams in this range that I have seen impressive results with are the FMS F13, and the LG G5X2. I run a custom cam from Bret Bauer, that is also in that range. The cam drives great, and I picked up 68 rwhp with it.

375rwhp - 224 cam
385rwhp - 228 cam
400rwhp - fm14

all can be tuned to run well on the street and work with stock heads


you question is still way to general. you have to realize that in the ls1 aftermarket there are cams ranging from the 20x all the way up to 24x...and most of them "can" work with stock heads.

everyone has a "best cam choice"

As a "rule" with the LS1, stay in the very low 230s for a good mix of power and driveability.

BTW, Teke, my buddies car made 421 with the F14 regular. I would have also made more power with the F14 HL, but I don't have an underdrive pulley and I'm sure my air filter needs to be changed after sucking water through it. :D :lol:

You also need to look at your car as a whole and full exhaust isn't all of it. A big cam with 2.73 gears will probably get you beat by a small cammed car w/a converter or even a bolt on car w/a converter.

But, you'd still be able to brag about making some nice peak numbers if thats your thing.

I am with Greed on this. Most of the time you will want a good low and midrange torque curve. Call Comp cams cam help line.

3.73 gears and SS3600 (assuming A4). Do that before ANY CAM install. Will totally make your car feel like a new machine and will be mods that will be needed when you get a cam anyhow.

Put a big cam in with stock gears/converter and getting killed by a bolt on car (or m6) is not my thing. ;)
