I want to paint my truck flat black, has anyone done this before? I wonder if I should bother getting an air compressor and a paint gun or just rattle can it. I would love to have a compressor for the tools but I don't have my own house yet so I can't get something that requires a 220volt plug or a hardwire setup. Is it possible to use a paint gun with a smaller compressor that can work on 110 or should I just get some rustoleum and have at it?

I guess this all depends on what you want your truck to look like... rattle-canned or a somewhat decent job if you're doing it yourself. You can get a decent sized 110VAC compressor that will run a paint-gun from almost anywhere. Lowe's, Home Depot, Sears, etc. I use a Craftsman 110VAC, 30-gallon, vertical compressor that will run a gun (although I've never done it). It does everything I need and it doesn't take up a lot of room. You'll need alot of cans of Rustoleum at how much/can? I'd use the compressor and a gun if it were me. Good luck! :D

I agree, doing a whole truck with rattle cans might not turn out the best and it will take alot of them to do it.

The guy painting my bumper has a HUGE compressor that works on 110. Works perfectly with his gun. The bumper looks awesome so far.

Wasn't there a write up not long ago where someone painted their entire car with spray paint and it turned out really good?

I saw the one where the guy rolled (yes... rolled) white Rustoleum on his old Corvair; and that turned out really good judging by the pics.

Looking on instructables.com there are a few cars painted with rustoleum.

The guy in the first instructables painting his Miata was using a gun to do the color coat.

Either way, you'll need a booth or something to keep dust out of the paint.
