das iroc 03-26-2008, 02:41 PM As if it was bad enough when Ford owned Jaguar, now it gets passed to Tata motors. I wonder whats going to happen to Jaguar next.

Threxx 03-26-2008, 02:46 PM Yeah sorry but an Indian company making prestigious 'European' luxury cars just isn't going to appeal to most of the world. The only way Tata is going to make this work is if they find some way to at an absolute minimum maintain quality control and design quality to the standard its at today, if not surpass it, to show the world that Tata owning them isn't a detraction point.
I really really doubt that's going to happen. Or even if it does, people are going to become quite a bit more critical of the cars and blame it on the new owners of the companies and the cars are going to lose most of their prestige.
To me this was a dumb move on Tata's part. To Ford... well I guess it's a good thing as they never did much worthwhile with those companies anyway.

skorpion317 03-26-2008, 02:55 PM The Ford executives who made this deal must be laughing hysterically. They got the best part of this deal.
Here's how it went down:
Ford: "Ok, we'll sell you the one of the lowest-selling mass-produced car brands in the world, which has not turned a profit in decades, and we'll throw in Land Rover. All you have to do is give us $2 billion."
Tata: "Sure! This sounds like a great idea! Even though Jaguar sells less cars than Porsche, we'll take it!"
Drive XR7 03-26-2008, 02:59 PM Tata will own the company, but the same people will still produce them in the same locations with the same parts.
Pretty stupid move on Tata's part, though.
BigDave 03-26-2008, 03:12 PM Buy the Jaguar with the bodacious tata's:D:D:D

Seeing as Ford paid $5 billion, I wouldn't think he would be laughing that much.
Gripenfelter 03-26-2008, 04:06 PM Or maybe Tata is looking for foreign manufacturing plants to expand their Tata line of cars on. Maybe Jaguar plants will also roll out certain Tata models?
scott's94z 03-26-2008, 04:31 PM so is that 'tay-tay' or taah-taah' or 'tay-taa'h or 'taah-tay' or 'data' with a T?

6speedZ28 03-26-2008, 04:54 PM So could we now say..."Threxx's wife has nice big Land Rover's"?
jg95z28 03-26-2008, 05:28 PM I wonder if Tata will reactivate Jaguar's racing program and provide engines to Force India for F1. (They currently are using Ferrari engines.) :D

Ford is just happy to get rid of that money-hemorrhaging mistake. They lost a lot more money trying to keep Jaguar afloat than what they paid for it.
SSbaby 03-26-2008, 08:30 PM I always thought Jaguar's were junk... hope the Indians could now recycle the junk to something a bit more useful... like saucepans for their curry dishes.

The new XF is an awesome performance sedan. :D
DAKMOR 03-26-2008, 09:54 PM Their exterior design is hit or miss, like Mercedes Benz.
The interior, haven't sat in one since 05, don't remember much.
I do love the XJ220 though.

Ford actually did wonders for Jaguar when it bought them. Engines stipped leaking and consuming oil by the gallon, quality was spotty, and it was a car that you actually bought because of name. There really wasn't any other reason.
Ford did pimp out Jag with the X series, and the money spent creating an all aluminum body pretty much made Jaguar a money losing company.
As for Tata owning Jag and LR, most people still don't know Ford owns Jaguar or Land Rover, so unless things go downhill, I don't see it making that big of a difference.

That may be true, but it may make Ford money in the long run if they use what they learned in that on future models. Very much like how Chrysler made the Prowler with an aluminum frame. Neither company made much money if any at all on either of these projects, but with the new emphasis on reduced weight for better fuel economy, aluminum frames and body panels will probably be seen in more higher production vehicles.

It might be awesome to some but being an awesome car does not guarantee high quality ownership.
Besides, I was being sarcy even if I dislike all things "British" or even remotely "British".
I assume the yanks had good reason to go to war with Britain... they knew their technology sucked. ;) :p
Eric Bryant 03-27-2008, 07:09 PM Jaguar is one of those brands where I fail to see the compelling brand promise, and although Land Rover has made some awesome vehicles in the past, I still think of them as a great brand for those people who think that a Hummer isn't a big enough waste of money. I can't see where Ford loses much through this sale (other than the huge amount of money poured down the drain in the last 10+ years turning around Jag). Tata seems to get a decent deal, too - $2B is a rather small amount of money if they can gain more prestige through the purchase, and there's probably minimal downside risk to the purchase.
