What oil would you pick in my situation?

150,000 1997 LT1. I use Mobil 1 10-30w would you use royal purple or Mobil 1 High mileage? I don't care about price.I heard Royal purple has more zinc and other stuff that bonds good to metal parts but is bad for emissions and the cat.

I know some people that swear by Royal Purple and I know people who wouldn't touch it with someone else's car. It's just a matter of preference i think. If I was better off financially I wouldn't mind giving one of those high speed oils a shot.

I'm no big on synth oil myself but since you've been using Mobile 1 keep using it.

The only reason to use "high milage" IMO is if you are having seal issues. High milage oil just has additives that make seals swell like engine stop leak additives.

We had 176k miles on he wife's Grand Am GT and high milage oil never touched it. I almost always ran conventional oil in it too. The car is still running perfect for the sister-in-law too.

High milage oils will cost you more than they are worth. I tried some in our old mitusbishi that had 170,000 miles on it and it made the oil leaks worse, and burned more oil. Switched right back over and it went back to "normal". My inlaws decided to switch to high milage in their 01 F150 with 120,000 on it. since its "recommended for vehicles over 75,000" 3 or 4 oil changes later and its now loosing 2 quarts between oil changes. There was not one problem with this truck before using that crap (other than bein a f*rd), maintenance was kept up always on time, driven easy but not grandma speed, and occasionally pulled light trailers, etc. Not heavy use by any means. I wouldnt use high milage in ANY motor for ANY reason. Swelling seals to slow a leak will only add to the problem, causing other seals to leak. If its that bad, either keep dumping oil into it until you can pull the motor and do it right or if you can repair it without pulling, just do it and save yourself $ time and the headache.... ok my crappy oil rant is done for now.

Haha, on a side note. the inlaws dont want to believe the crappy oil is their problem... Even though I told them the front main and oil pan had developed a leak shortly after switching.... Castrol GTX H.M. sorry for those that like castrol, but thats bad enough for me right there, then add the H.M. crap to the equation. Anybody else hate it when people ask for your opinion on a vehicle and you tell them what they need to do and they ignore it and expect you to be able to work around it and make it right anyway???? ok im reallly done this time.

Asking about Oil is always interesting... its like talking about religion or politics, everyone has an opinion and everyone is sure they are rights.

A lot of people swear by the German made Castrol Syntech 0w30, a lot of others swear by Mobil 1, and still others love Royal Purple.

Check out this web page for more than you ever wanted to know about oil.

You could also pick one, and get an oil analysis done from Blackstone Labs. I've got one of their sample kits and I might send mine in for analysis next time I change the oil, not really because I think its gonna tell me much, but more because I'm an engineer and I'm curious.

Royal Purple sucks!!! I tried it once. after about 2800 miles, my car ran funny. it had symptoms of low oil. pulled the dipstick, not a drop registered! before you ask, my 93 z28 doesn't burn or leak oil. you can't pay me to use the purple puke!

Royal Purple shears more than most oil under heat.

Regular old oil is fine from napa.....

I wouldn't use RP is trash......seen it sludge up bad.

All of it has to meet the same standards.....I have seen the inside of alot of engines and the only ones that look bad are the people who don't change it. I will stick with cheap oil...I dont think it makes any difference

I like REDLINE 5-30. Works very well in my 97. Engine has about 120K mile. Driven hard, slight mods. Also use it in my tranny and 3rd member, and redline water-wetter in with my coolant. Read about thier products at www.Redlineoil.com
Personal preference, not a lot of studies out there comparing various brands. I swear I could "feel" a difference, car seemed to run "more comfortably". My mileage did get a little better, 4 to 6% I think, when I changed from non-synthetic, and engine runs cooler too, and does not create sludge as far as I can tell, having removed valve covers and intake to repair push rods and lifters.
I know, I know, opinions, and all that. So, anyway, U got mine now, too!

If it has had Mobil 1 10W30 run in it up to this point, I think I would not change a thing, but that is just my opinion. I run Valvoline 10W40 in my 95 and as far as I know that is all that has been used in it and it is about 212.4K miles.

My '92 Bonneville and also my '75 Scout both run smoother with sythentic oils. Not only does the Scout run smoother, but alkso has more seat of the pants power and better fuel mileage as well.

I have to agree with the differences between syn and regular dino juice. I have tried almost every regular oil in my 96 cherokee. It has 207k on it right now and always had a tick to it as most jeeps do. Finally I ordered some of the valvoline high milage full syn oil and the tick went away, easier start ups, and slightly better gas mileage. I dont know if it just cleaned everything up inside so it makes it run better now but I will only run the syn in it now.
