Do i need my cat?

If i have a bad catalytic converter, what should i do. It is an emissions thing right? No emissions in florida so do i even need it? Is it legal? Are there other options? I've read a little bit about replacing the cat with a test pipe. What effect will that have on the car(performance/sound/good/bad) Is it dangerous to the car?

Yeah, you could replace the cat or use an offroad pipe; that's up to you. However, I would not advise chucking your "bad" cat. The "precious metals" inside the cat make them worth good $$. I'm sure someone in your area would give you some dough for it.

Weld in a piece of pipe or have a high flow cat installed. If you have no emissions testing, then you have nothing to worry about. I'm not sure what you mean by the cat being bad, but if the cat is clogged, it is going to hurt your performance so you will want to have it remedied whatever path you choose.

Just to clarify the "legal" issue.... it is not legal, under Federal law, to remove the catalytic converter(s), change the number or location of cats, or to replace a catalytic converter unless it has been tested and found to be defective. Whether your state chooses to enforce this law will determine the chances you will be caught or fined.

Yea, next weekend i'm getting it hacked off and having some pipe welded in its place. Any tips/advice for the guy who is doing it? I assume its a pretty simple thing?

Yeah, its pretty simple, shouldn't be a problem for someone who knows how to cut a length of pipe and weld.
