Removing window tint

My girlfriend just failed inspection for tinted windows, and decided to take it off.

I have been doing some research and have found a few methods.

-Ammonia and water, covered in a garbage bag sitting in the sun, then just peel

-Steamer then peel

-Hairdrier and peel

-Just peel


All followed up with a razor blade or some steel wool and some kinda thinner



Anybody have a way that worked well? Im leaning toward the steamer, seems the idea is to get the glue melted and soften the film so they come off together and dont break.

side window or rear window with defrost?

I too am very interested in any insight someone can offer on this. Side windows are easy, but man is my back window being a pain!!

Just peel it off and wash the residue off with a acetone soaked rag.

well i use simple green to break the glue. simple green and a plastic choir boy on the back window and simple green and razor on the sides. but ive learned its worth the $100 to pay a tint guy to take it off

its a lancer so it doesnt have gigantic F-body side windows

took me all of maybe a half hour the way I described above

The amonia method worked great on my back window.

How old is the tint? I have had to take tint off my old camaro tons of times cause I kept putting it back on :rolleyes: ... If it is not totally faded and still in good condition then just pick at one of the corners and slowly peel it off. If you peel slow enough you might get lucky and not have to clean the glue off. If the glue is on the window just use some steel wool (home depot) and some glass cleaner. If it is older tint then use a heat gun you will see it pull away from the glass and it should be pretty easy...hope that helps keep us updated.

i removed the old tint in my camaro, if it's just the side windows here is all you need to do.
peel the old tint off by starting on a corner with a razor to lift it up. then blue windex and the razor to remove the left on glue. i used the windex because i didn't wanna deal with acetone or ammonia and it worked fine. back window and it has the defroster lines then you would need to bag it or use steam/heat. don't try to dry peel the back or the defroster will be shot.

I took mine off early in the morning when the windows are damp its easier that way then use paint remover to take off the glue thingy...seems to come off hella fast
