400 lbs of torque in that small car could be lots of fun and efficient.

That would be incredible... those motors are just so efficient and even the little ~100hp motors they put in the Jettas are livable due to the torque they put out, so I'm sure this one would be quite a bit of fun to drive in the A4. The new A4 looks like it's going to be pretty nice, too.

Only problem I have is I'd want to buy that car for low fuel prices, but I'd be worried that high cost of maintenance and repairs might offset that savings.

I'd rather get a small diesel in a Honda or GM.

How are Honda diesels? I've never really seen one before?

While not a big fan of deisels in general (I just like gasoline engines in performance cars better - call me a luddite), I've always thought that a deisel/electric hybrid would be the way to go for the general public if they could overcome the particulate emmisions issues (which it seems they have with the new emmisions systems now produced).

Whens the new Jetta TDI coming out? Is it using a 4cylinder TDI motor? Anyone have any stats on those?

i believe they are 1.9l diesels, they are definatly 4cyl. they should be out this spring.

I'd rather have a VW TDI than a GM diesel, assuming they stick with the pompe duse. Just do the oil change every 15k (It'll cost near $100), and the timing belt (assuming this engine has one) and that engine wil run for 500k easy. The "breakin-in" time on the pompe duse's is roughly 60,000 miles.

Agreed-the Pompe Duse is a king of small diesels. The 3.0TDI A4 and BMW's new 530d also look to be quite the perfect, right and tasty little machines. Throw a diesel in the MKV Golf/Jetta cars for a 2nd time, and new German diesels become affordable for the people again. I've heard VW has delayed diesels until mid 2008 though.
