gday guys,

one of my mates in the army is overseas serving and has asked me to do some research for him. he has an 89 rs camaro with the v6 in it, hes looking to put an ls1 with a 6 speed man or 4 speed auto into it since those engine trans combos are very common down here in australia. was wondering if anyone has done this converison before and any information on doing the swap would be appreciated, info like what needs replacing, what needs fabricating or any other information.

cheers.

you need to head over the www.thirdgen.org they are very familiar with that type of swap and what needs to be done.

the ls1 manual is a 6 speed, the automatic is a 4 speed.

as for the swap,

hes going to either need the computer from the donor ls1 car, or what might be easier yet more expensive would be to buy a stand alone kit from painless wiring.

take the ls1 engine mounts and either bolt them or weld them onto the frame rails of the car while there attached, this way itll all line up correctly.

another issue youll have to address if fuel delivery. my suggestion would be to simply run a line out of his factory gas tank with an inline pump, to a fuel pressure regulator, to the engine.

these are just a few of the main points, there are many small others such as tuning, wire routing, transmission cross member, center console etc. but hopefully thats a start. as WISHMASTER said, go on over to third gen, there are a few guys running the swap over there and im sure they can help you out in more detail, seeing as how theyve done it firsthand. good luck to your friend and the swap!

you have to remember that no matter how good you are with a stick you cannot shift faster than fluid,
but just to let u know that the 98-02 ls1 automatics are a 1/10th of a second quicker then the manual in the quarter mile. <check mate>

Spend time here (http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/ltx-lsx/) and specifically read this (http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/ltx-lsx/448105-so-you-want-swap.html).

http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com has most of the parts you'll need, and Bruce (the owner) is a good guy to work with, I've talked to him several times, and bought a few things. They do tend to be a bit pricy, but always seem to be as described, so you get what you pay for. Sphon has good parts too for thirdgens, basically just look around thirdgen.org (I'm v6canvas on that site).

I'm personally doing that swap (350 v8 auto to LS1 6-speed) and swapped in a plastic tank from a 2000 Trans Am, (changed all f-bodies had plastic tanks from 99-02) for the lower weight, bigger capacity and the fuel pump can keep up. Then LS1 runs at higher pressure than past engines, so stock pumps only last for a short time.

keep us updated.

Maybe also check out the hybird section on LS1tech.com This has become a very popular swap and has therefore attracted attention from aftermarket parts vendors who have manufactured parts to help in the swap. Good luck with it.
