Anyway to remove the speed limiter w/o buyin a hypertech or having tuning? I'd like to remove without paying like $300!!! Thanks.

Is it really at 115mph? I got my V6 Camaro to go 118mph with nothing done to the limiter. I don't know any way around the limiter other then getting a chip.

It's 118 on Zs if you didn't order the high speed tires.
It's 163 if you got the right tires.

I had the same issue. I bought my car off the lot with the factory ground appearance pkg. Little did I know that included the steel driveshaft and narrow tires. I first found out about it on the dyno, when it cutout @ 5400RPM in 4th.

I temporarily borrowed another VIN with the same options and got rid of it that way (after upgrading the tires). I later had the PCM tuned so it didn't matter.

The VIN was reprogrammed by an acquaintance at a dealership for nada, btw.

I would look for one that is used instead of buying a new chip to save yourself some money.

Well, mine stock didnt' come with z-rated tires and came with the steel driveshaft. The limiter is like 115 or 118 or something, I hate hittin that damn thing, I forget it's there, and it almost shakes me out of my lane! I really just want to get rid of the damn thing for free or really cheap!!! My boys have to stay at 115 or lower, or else I can't keep up when we're cruisin, it sucks!!!!!!! Plus, everytime I get a race on the highway, it sucks havin it!

The SS's doesn't come with anything other than Z-rated tires. The only one's that you could possibly get non Z-rated tires with are the Z28 or the V6. So yes stock F1's are Z-rated.

Eagle RS-A's, GS-C's, and F1's are Z-rated

The Eagle GA's are not.

Disconnect your speedometer, I think that'll fix the speed limiter :D

For the Z28, the optional z-rated tires are Goodyear GS-C's in 245/50/ZR16. I'm pretty sure the standard equipment RS-A's aren't Z-rated, hence Z28's with the 118 mph limit. The GA's only came on V6's.

EDIT: The RS-A's are in fact z-rated. So I guess no 2002 LS1 Camaros have the 118 mph limter? Were there Z28's on GA's in previous model years?

Correct, to my knowledge, all 2002 LS1'd Camaros (and I would assume Firebird and T/As) came standard with Z-rated tires (RS-As) and there was still the $225 option...for the GS-Cs. IOW, no limiter on the '02s.

96FLZ is right. You shouldn't have a speed limited to 115 and you should have z-rated tires. I have the GOODYEAR RS-A'S and they are z-rated.

Sorry, but you're wrong on that one....................until 2002, Z28's could come with non Z-rated tires and a factory programmed ~115mph rev/speed limiter.................however, for 2002, they (Z28's) all came with Z-rated tires, and a rev limiter that's a lot harder to reach!:D (although, with a good stretch of road and no traffic, it does exist!!!;)).

I don't know if it's been mentioned or not, but the easiest way to tell if a car is limited low or high is to look at the speedo.
The low cars will have a ~115 mph speedo.
The high cars will have a ~150 mph speedo.

Not true, mine has a 155 speedo, and is limited to 115.

I guess I lucked out when I got my car. Got it used and it currently has z-rated tires. I hit 140 a few times, so I guess I never had the rev limiter or the previous owner did the work for me.

Okay, must have changed then... I know at least to 98 that's how it was. Then again, I haven't been F-body shopping since I bought my most recent one. They very well could have changed in 99.

Yeah, the only way to know if you got it, is to check the driveshaft, or actually hit the limiter.

What does the driveshaft have to do with the rev-limiter?? If you're thinking it's got something to do with steel driveshafts being in cars with the 115mph limiter, and aluminum ones being in cars with the ~162mph limiter, that can't be true 'cause my car has a steel driveshaft (AFAIK?! ) and yet I've had the needle beyond the 250km/h that my speedo reads:p!.

M6 LS1s all came with aluminum shafts. No matter what tires.
A4s with the performance axle option came with aluminum.
A4s with the standard gear came with steel.

Now, a point that needs to be made before M6ers start saying "well I have a steel shaft"...
GM went on a quiet mission to replace all the aluminum shafts that they could with steel when warrantee work afforded the chance. I don't know why, but they did it. So if your car does not match the layout above, then your shaft was replaced by a PO or the dealer.

Yes, but i've had my car since it was basically brand new. I bought it w/ 4,300 miles on it. It is an M6 and has a steel driveshaft, and i've never had any warantee work done on it. So how do you explain that one? I got it with so little miles on it, b/c it was in hiding for 2 years before they could find it and reposses it from the previous owner.

redz_02

he is right, all m6's have aluminum drive shafts, Only the a4's with the performance rear have aluminum, hence the 200 dollar option charge to get 3.23's instead of 2.73's, to pay for the difference between the iron driveshaft and the aluminum. Are you sure you don't have an aluminum driveshaft. As for the speedo, if you don't know anyone with a programmer, or hpp3, or good freinds with some mechanics at the dealership, then the hpp3 is your cheapest route to get rid of it. Then the predotor=420 and lastly LS1edit=500+Laptop.

Yeah, i'm positive it's steel. I think i'll just wait till I change my cam and need tuning to get rid of the limiter.

The scumbag could have traded the shaft for a steel one plus $50 or $100 quick cash in the pocket. Any LT1 owner would have jumped on it.

Didn't think of that. Doubt this guy knew anything about the car or cars in general for that matter, cause it was bone stock when I got it. So I doubt he changed anything. And it came with chrome 5 spokes with the oe 245/50/16 RSA's on it Z-rated, but he must've seen those on another car in the dealer and said I want those rims, cause I checked the rpo codes, and it shows that it came with the 235 non Z-rated. Hence I was assuming that's why it has the 115 limiter and steel drive shaft. But i've been told it's actually a good thing, cause it'll hold up to more power and abuse, and my car is already lighter than everyone else's cause I have no power options. I have all the important stuff, the monsoon stereo, the chrome rims, the 6-speed, and the most important, the LS1!!!!!!! So it's actually pretty cool. With me (215-220) in it and all the junk that I keep in the trunk, including tool box, plus spare and all, it only weighed about 3400 lbs!!! I have friends that've weighed there T/A's and Camaro's at 36xx something without them in it!!!!

Well I was able to get up to 130 mph!!!! It did it coming in from out of town at about 4:30 am. There was completely no traffic at all. No problems.

Why is that when I got myself a set of P255/50/ZR16s that they would scrape on the wheel well when I turned forcing me to go back to my original non Z-rated tires? I also think we neglected the ? being asked on this thread is there any way to erase the limiter for less than $300. I personally dont know, but you guys kinda got off the subject.

Disconnecting speedo won't work as the trans shift points, etc. are based on the VSS...
I'd say you need a HPP+ or a reprogram of some sort[LT1 edit etc] or a mail order one[100+ bux]
I used a HPP for now 'Tuner cat' coming soon tho..
My speed limiter was more like 108 or so, too...

My 2002 Z28, has the Chrome Wheels and Eagle GSC 245/50/zr16.. And I did run the RPO codes over at z28.com and it came up with the fact that these tires and wheels came with my car, plus my car came with 4L60E and 2.73 gears.. So would I be able to get above 118 ??

I have a 02 Z28 as well, but the newer Z28's come with at least Eagle RS-A Z rated tires, so to answer your question, yes you can, just as long as your car originally came with Z-rated tires. Hell you can top this thing out at 155, my current is 137
