LOS ANGELES, Nov 14 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp (GM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is on track to road-test its electric car, the Chevrolet Volt, in early 2008, the automaker's head of global product development said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at the Los Angeles auto show, Bob Lutz said the largest U.S. automaker is also on track to launch the Volt in November 2010.
"A lot of our team members working on the Volt keep telling us how aggressive that is," he said. "And it is aggressive. We're not going to let up."
Lutz said GM is testing the lithium-ion battery technology developed by its two suppliers -- A123 Systems and Compact Power Inc, a subsidiary of LG Chem (051910.KS: Quote, Profile, Research).
"The target is by the end of the first quarter (of 2008) we will have street-drivable prototypes," Lutz said. (Reporting by Kevin Krolicki; editing by John Wallace)

Good. I'm really hoping this one is the game-changer, the product that makes even the dullest, most Camry-addled consumer open their eyes and say, "Huh, maybe something really *has* changed with GM." If they deliver it on time, they have a good chance of doing just that.

I can see it now...
Team Member A, "Mr Lutz, may I take a five minute..."
Lutz, "Quiet you! and back to work, we've got to have these things on the street in a few months!"
