I have been contemplating buying the alternator relocation bracket that eliminates the ac and the ps but I was wondering how much of a pain it will be to drive a car on the street as such. Im not worring about the ac bc I am only home from the middle of september to march so it is not too unbearable to drive even though I am in Texas. The only thing holding me back is the fact of driving a car without ps that was not meant to be driven like that. Ive torn belts before and even had a harmonic balancer fall off once (that was fun) but I didnt drive the car enough to really see how bad it would be on the street. Basically I wanted to know if it is worth it. Im trying to shred weight off. Thanks, Zach

why are you trying to shed weight off a street car?

I personally would miss my A/C and my PowerSteering, i had the a/c delete on my old z.

Your not going to gain much of anything at all by removing them other then maybe more muscular arms from trying to turn the car when going slow.

If you really wanna know how bad it is without powersteering take the belt off and drive around the block see how you like it.

I had to go down to Houston, Texas last month for some specialized training for work. It gets hot down there.:D I couldn't imagine not having A/C. Frankly though, if you can tough out the hot days and don't mind "muscling" your car through turns, then deleting those systems might be the thing for you. I don't think you would have a very comfortable street car though. Have you thought about weight reduction in other ways, such as the spare tire and jack and the rear seats?

I had a buddy that took the power steering off his 87 Trans Am, and it worked for a while, but it put so much pressure on his steering column that one night we were going to the bar and it just snapped. When you turned the steering wheel you turned everything. That meant the ignition, cruise, wipers, everything. Took a lot of work to get the car running on again the next day.

What size tires do you have? If the fronts are wider that the stock 245s your gonna hate life wrestling it around at parking lot speeds. Removing the P/S will only save you about 7-8 lbs and and make the car a pain to drive. I'd keep it.

Personally I'm against the whole loosing weight thing on street cars, you can pull all the creature conforts out of your car and loose MAYBE a little over 100lbs. That will gain you about 1/10 in the quarter. Is that 1/10 worth it to be hot all the time and not have power steering.

In the end, it's your car and only you have to be happy with it.

I totally agree. You may be able to live without AC but these cars are a b!tch to drive without PS. That high ratio steering rack and steering column weren't meant to be used without PS. The innards of your steering column, especially the tilt mechanism will take a severe beating when you apply the force necessary to turn those fat tires. The rag joint, which is a complete joke to begin with, will also make its displeasure known. So will the u-joints in the column and shaft. Remember, with PS these items don't see much load at all - all the force is being applied within the rack itself.

These are the responses I was expecting I just thought I would ask, I know with all the extra stuff and the power steering and all the ac stuff they say you can drop over 100 lbs. It is important because this car will see lots of track time and not a great amount of street time. I have another car to drive but you guys are right I dont think I really want to deal with no ps. My tires are 275's by the way. Thanks for the input.

Did it with 275's. It sucks and I strongly recommend against it. With skinnies not a problem, even in the parking lot. (With a madman rack BTW).
