Anyone have any opinions on using Royal Purple Synthetic in a 98 LS1?

I use it in the transmission and rear end. I use Mobil 1 in the motor.

too expensive

won't be any better than a good name brand synthetic oil

It works good on my differential, i use mobil1 on engine but RP is really pricey.

After pulling the pan on my 00 with just 2 seasons (300 miles, 200 passes) of running RP, fresh every season and seeing all the black residue. I'll not be using it in my engine again.

It'll perform the same as any other full synthetic oil.

royal purple imo has a problem with sludge or residue. mobile 1 is the way t go.

I would not recommend synthetic fluids for anything that uses clutches (i.e. automatic transmissions or clutch-type limited-slip differentials).

That is what manufacturers are calling for a lot of times. Both my Avalanche and my wife's Scion transmissions call for Synthetic.

98 Z28s have a clutch type Auburn posi and have synth in them from the factory and calls for synth as the replacement fluid.

Aftermarket clutch type posis like the Eaton HD specifically warn not to use synth.

So blanket statements like yours are not valid. Each has to be case by case.

No, Royal Purple blows. Read the whole thread, then look on LS1tech. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1855307&highlight=AMSOIL

I run Redline Synthetic 10W40 with a WIX filter in my Vette. It's 9 bucks a quart, but consistently proven to be the best. And to the people bitching about the cost of oil... Do you change your oil every other day or something? If you change your oil every 2 or 3 months who gives a **** if a good quality oil change is $30 or $40 more?

Hmmm Only bearing failures we saw in our race engines were w/RP. Reher Morrison says the only way you can use RP in a Pro Stock motor is to change it after every run. We have run M1 in our Alky drag motors for 7 years w/out issue, but have seen 2 failures w/RP.

We have had good luck with M1, Lucas, Amsoil, but RP has resulted in engine failures that the only cause was lubrication failure. I don't care what any "tests" show, we run $18-22,000 Alky motors and compete all over the Eastern US in Top Dragster, Super-comp, & Super Pro....and have several close friends who run Pro-Stock (Dave Connolly, Jeg Coughlin, etc.) and aside from a few extra HP from the oil sheeting off the metal so fast, RP will not protect our 8,000 RPM race motors. In fact we will NOT warranty our performance builds if RP is used. We run our race motors at the ragged edge & we have to rely on good protection, RP does not. Anyone that wants to argue the point just put up $20k for one of our new race motors & we run one on M1 & one on RP, full load dyno runs and see which ones lasts. End of discussion.

I believe I have been saying this for the past 7+ years on here.. RP leaves a horrid residue and no engine builder I know would ever use it..

I use it. Never had any problems and I just pulled the pan off before I stuck this same motor that was ragged from the 79 into this car and it was clean enough to eat from...not sure what the LS1's problem is...works fine for me.

I use it in the engine on my vette and trans am. I just done a timing chain swap in the trans am and it was nice and clean, no residu or film like said above

It'll be in the bottom of your pan. I guess I should have taken pics for the non-believers.

I agree,

RP makes great trans & diff lubes, but the oil sheets off the cyl walls to quick & does not hold as good of a film cushion for long-term bearing life if pushed to extremes. M1 is what we run in our street to all out race alky motors.

A while back RP was the title sponsor in NHRA Pro Stock and the competitors had to run it. Only way to keep the lower end together was to change after every run. It does make a slight gain in HP due to the sheeting & flow.
