And how important is it?

Transmission(700R4) worked when it was taken out. I am planning on putting it in my M6 car and was gonna clean it up/change filter and stuff like that, then I saw this crack in that part!

Thats the forward clutch accumulator housing cover, eventual failure will result in suddent loss of all forward gears. You need to go to a trans shop and ask if they have and aux valve body for a 700r4.

X2. Superior also sells a HD cover thats steel and thicker. Corrects another Aux VB issue of the piston pin coming out. After you remove that cover you need to check the pin to see if its coming out. Here is some good info on that. Also list the Superior part #. The part is about $10 nowadays http://www.specialtytrans.com/specialty/gm/700-Tips/700R4-Aux-VB.htm Hope this helps

I wonder what caused it to break?

And why can I not just put another cover on it?

You can put another cover on it. Ive seen broken ones B4. Cheap thin aluminum, its like an accumilator, so its got a piston and thick spring in there. Pressure, maybe some douch overtightened it B4 causing a stress fracture. The spring is directly against it and the piston pushes on the spring. The HD part cures a 'walking out' probelm with the piston center pin and is thicker to cure the cracking issue. Just an option. Unless you find a used one off a junk tranny the GM part from the dealer is going to cost more than the HD part. Part # is on the end of it. Options yours. Hope this helps

If it's the cover, why do I need the aux valve body? Or do I just need the cover?

Thanks for the link! :)

It would be more likely a tranny shop will get you a used AuxVB in its entirity from a donor trans. I would inspect the one you have inside and out gro any more stress fractures, etc. If youre uncomfortable with re-using that one, try to locate an entire assembly. Like PerfBuilt said, just try a local tranny shop. Dealer is probably high enough on the cover alone, Im guessing the entire unit will be outrageous. If you think your assembly is OK and it was just the cover, then replace the cover by itself. Just throwing out some options for ya. Hope ya find it and get it back on the road =)

I'll inspect it first, then try the HD cover and see what happens! :)

Be sure the spring isnt broken (tho Ive never seen an AuxVB spring breal just a 1-2 Accumilator spring) and the piston isnt cracked either. The piston seal needs to be good and snug, Meaning it will be tight in the bore. Also follow the pin-length checks on the link I posted B4. Hope this helps and Good Luck Bud!

One more question.

I know the 700R4s aren't electronic, so what all do those wires control inside of it?

MIKZ86TA

Thats for the Torque Converter Lockup. Most have 3 wires to the 4-pin plug. The part bolted up front it the TCC Solenoid. Its activation with power and ground are what cause the hydraulic circuit to operate and lockup the converter clutch. The round parts on the ends of the ValveBody are pressure switches. When fluid pressure in that VB circuit are activated and deactivated, those switches transmit the fluid press input to a electical signal or they complete the electrical circuit. One might send a signal to the ECM teling the ECM when 4th gear has been reached. Based on other ECM inputs, the ECM will send a signal back to the tranny and allow the TCC Solenoid to engage...causing the lockup action. There are a few different wire routings and pressure switches. But thats basically the 411 on that. Hope this helps

That's a lot of crap for a NON ELECTRIC tranny!

What can I clean it out with....the parts you can see with the pan off.

Is the tranny being rebuilt or RU just doing the on-car fix? Nothing really to clean. Its always submerged in tranny fluid. Im not sure what UR wanting to clean

It has been siitting with the dipstick tube out of it for a couple years and "stuff" has found its way into the pan. Leaves and stuff, I guess.:(

But anyway, there's some "stuff" on the wires and some other parts.

I guess I could just take some paper towels and clean everything off.

The pin was sticking out a little bit, so I pecked it back it.

What makes the pin come out, because from looking at at, it serves no purpose...as well as the spring inside.
