Does anyone know if/what modern 5/6 speed manual trans bolt up to GM straight sixes?

For instance, if I had an I6 '67, could I bolt a T5/T56 to it?

With the right adapter you can bolt anything you want to it. The first thing you should do is find out what tranny was offered with that motor. It the same tranny also came with the V8s then I would think it is possible.

I'm pretty sure that the bolt pattern is the same between the I6 and sbc/bbc.

That's what I thought, but I'm looking for verification.

I know where I can find a 54 Chevy 2-door with a well done body, decent interior, straight six, and 3 on the floor.

It needs a clutch, and the price looks okay, but I'm wondering if I could swap the T5 out of a 3rd gen into it.

Since I would have the tranny out anyway, wouldn't it make sense to drop the 3 speed and go with 2 more gears and over drive?

Yes it would make sense. However, if the input shaft is not the right length you man need an adapter plate (well in this case a spacer) anyway. Not a big deal though. You may also have to change the hydraulics, but I'm not familiar with the clutch setup in a 54 Chevy so don't quote me on that.

Sounds like a fun project though, while your at it why don't you drop a V8 in there too?;)

I'd already thought about fabbing a linkage, but I hadn't thought about the input shaft. I hadn't thought about driveshaft length either, but both of those are pretty easy to fix.

As far as a V8 goes I was thinking about sticking with the I6 just for something to do. I see a lot of V8 swaps, but I'm thinking for a cruiser/driver the 6 would be kind of cool, particularly with a newer 5 speed speed rather than an older 3 speed.

Nothing wrong with a V8 swap, and I'm not getting all rabid about it, I just thought it would be nice to cruise the 6, and if the new trans was a drop in that would make sense.

However, it might just be easier to drop a SBC in it and call it a day, and if that's the case the price no longer makes sense.

No I think you should stick with the I6 for now too. Wait until you get bored with it and have an extra BBC lying around to swap motors.;)
