Does anyone know of a resource to identify small block heads from the casting marks on the front? I used to have a page saved in my favorites but it has gone missing. I just would like that as a quick reference so That I don't have to pull the valve cover off everyone I come across to run the casting numbers.

the only way would be to check the casting numbers. go to Mortec.com to check the numbers.

I realize that running the casting numbers is the most accurate way but when looking at buying a vehicle the owner usually isn't too likely to let someone pull a valve cover. I'm looking at an s10 with a small block conversion and the owner tried to tell me they were double humps and they are not. I can identify a double hump casting mark and these aren't. They are two triangles. He said they may be "power pack" heads, whatever that means. I was just wanting a quick easy way of identifying a set of heads without pullng the valve covers.

There also used to be a kickazz site on angelfire, but last time I tried to access it I got the dreaded 404.

Thanks but unfortunately none of those symbols match. Oh well I traded my 88 turbo daytona for it any way. I guess I can pull a valve cover and run the numbers now.

if the owner wanted to sell the car bad enough, he wouldnt mind removing a valve cover! I mean its only 4 bolts

Well 4 bolts and a new gasket possibly. I'll get around to identifying the heads one of these days. I have a feeling this thing is going to turn out to be a pile. Just this weekend I've exploded the radiator and blew out the main brake line to the rear end.
