Who makes the best A/F guages?

Ive been putting off running my car on the spray until I track down a slight tick, and can get a A/F gauge to keep an eye on it.

So who has the best set ups for a accurate, simple, A/F gauge that can be effectively used for tuning? Something that will be responsive. I know some of them are slow to respond to changes and, therefore, are pretty much useless.

There was a "shootout" on 8 or so different kinds of widebands a few months back... I believe Innovative's had the #1 all around. Look up Innovative Motorsports as I believe they have the article on their website.
The article is from GM Hi-Tech mag I believe. So, dont think they rigged it just cause its on the web-site.

I have always used the Innovate LM1 and never had any problems with it. Here is a link to it

http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/products/lm1.php

I have used this in every car I have put together and it is reads almost exactly the same as the AEM wideband we use with our Honda applications. The reading on the LM1 and AEM EMS are dead on with one another. I have also used the Motec and did not like it as well as the LM1, but then again the LM1 is a portable unit.

i hate my innovative, it only works when it wants too half the time its just the 3 lines, ive checked every line and its perfect and even when it works it doesnt give a standard reading like 14.7 it gives some goofy numbers. i also have an AEM in my cobalt and i love it! its simple and easy to install.

Unless you are running a wideband O2, isn't an A/F gauge pointless because it jumps around?

I think everyone so far has been talking about wide-bands.

This one looks interesting, because its available with dual sensors, has an adjustable sampling rate up to 100 times/sec, built in logging, and includes an alarm/relay capability that could be used to interlock the nitrous system. Never saw one, or had any feedback on how they work though.

I have an Innovative LC-1 with a DynoTune square digital gauge. It works perfectly. I got the small square gauge so I could mount it as high as possible to see easily while driving. Now DynoTunes has a digital gauge/AFR shut down switch for the nitrous (which I plan on upgrading to!)

My lc1 with the dyno tune gauge is pathetic. Almost smoked my stroker cause of it. It randomly looses its program. I had the car over 1 full point lean becuase of it

I have only had to reset mine once, only because I had it disconnected from the gauge on the first trip to the dyno (their wideband was acting up, so we hooked it up to mine). On the second trip the dyno (different dyno this time) my wideband readings matched with theirs so I know its accurate.

I read that the dyno tune wrks on stock o2's sonds like a pretty cool gadget and only $100 !

If you are willing to spend the money I bought the Dyno Jet Wideband Commander:

http://www.widebandcommander.com

I have not installed it yet but it does have a lot of neat fatures...comes with dyno software and a control module and you can turn logging on with a switch...pretty neat.

That gauge does sound pretty awesome!!! I'd like to know if it does work with our stock o2's and if you need anything else to hook it up.

That gauge does sound pretty awesome!!! I'd like to know if it does work with our stock o2's and if you need anything else to hook it up.

Indicates in the link it works with narrow-band sensors with a 0-1V operating range. That is what is used as "stock" O2's.

Problem is, while you can assume a calibration and make that gauge read out the A/F ratio, the stock narrow-band sensors are only accurate within +/- 0.1 A/F ratio units of 14.7:1. They work great at controlling the part-load, closed-loop A/F ratio at the 14.7:1 required for the cat(s) to function. But when you get beyond that range, the sensors have a very flat sensitivity. A very large change in A/F ratio produces a very tiny change in output voltage. Add to that the fact that the output voltage is extremely sensitive to sensor operating temperature, and you have a situation where the indicated A/F ratio is more sensitive to operating temperature than it is to actual A/F ratio. The gauge may read 12.0:1, but there is no guarantee that's what the A/F ratio really is.

Now the question becomes, where do you set the trip point for the "lean" A/F ratio shutdown? If the gauge is only accurate at 14.7:1, it may not protect the engine against anything other then a catastrophic fuel failure. So you have to pick a richer set-point, and the accuracy is not guaranteed.

The wide-band sensors eliminate the problem of the narrow-band sensitivity. That's why they make more sense.

I put the Innovate LC1 in my car but it was a pain cause I had to remount the gauge into an Autometer gauge cup to match the other gauges. I still need to redo it someday to make it match better, but I am happy with how well it works.
