New king of the hill??

Shelby Supercars' Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo overtook the Bugatti Veyron yesterday as the world's fastest production car. Making the record-setting run on a closed two-lane stretch of Washington State public highway, the 1183 horsepower Ultimate Aero was able to hit a top speed of 257.11 mph and averaged 255.83 mph — 3.11 mph faster than the unofficial record set by the Bugatti Veyron.

Although the Ultimate Aero was able to do over 257 mph, the official record will stand at 255.83 mph. This is because the Guinness World Records requires a vehicle testing for the top speed record to race down the course, turn around, and then make a return pass within one hour. The top speed is calculated by averaging the top speeds of each pass, negating any favorable road or weather conditions in any one direction. The Ultimate Aero's first pass netted a top speed of 257.11 mph with the car hitting 254.55 mph on its return run, averaging out to the record speed of 255.83 mph.

The SSC Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo uses a 387 cubic-inch twin-turbo V8 rated at 1183 horsepower and 1094 lb-ft of torque. The car weighs in at 2750 lbs, resulting in weight to horsepower ratio of 2.33 — a record for a production car. In addition to being able to go well over 250 mph, the Ultimate Aero can go from 0-60 in 2.78 seconds, cover the quarter mile in 9.9 seconds at 144 mph and circle the skidpad at 1.05 g.

Thing about the Veyron is that it's a luxurious work of art. I'm not surprised there's a faster production car, but that thing isn't much to look at (not that it's ugly, just not special), and from the glimpse of the interior it's pretty utilitarian in there too.

Got a friend who has replaced a FEW front splitters on his Carrera GT... one was from simply putting it in the enclosed trailer!:eek:

If you got money-enough to play with $500k-$1million cars, you don't sweat over having $40k reairs done to your front splitter. :thumb:

(Funny thing is, he took thetrailer - a brand new Featherlite - to another buddy's fab shop and had them cut and weld the rear door so that the transition from ground to door and then door to trailer were smooth enough for the car not to rub during load and unload onlevel ground. Nevermind the car and splitter repairs, this guy dumped another $5k on mods to his $20k trailer too.

Must be nice to be loaded, huh? :shrug:

Let's see... ticket for doing 257mph in a 70 mph zone... what would that cost me?
Insurance on the car? (Comp and collision both on top of liability to be sure)

TIRES - OMG at the tire prices for something like this.
I'd say operating costs in general for this car would be scary.

Lol, I love reading the comments, somebody ripped on the car as being litle more than a clapped out race car lacking the sort of ammenities that would classify it as anything but a race car. Sorta reminds me about somebody sometime making a post about driving a live axle car for more than 8 or 9 hours would lead to certain spinal injury, have we really devolved into such complete and utter candy-arses to think that anything less than a fully loaded car with all the gadets, buttons and whistles is undrivable except on a track

I dont go back that far , but I do remember my 90 no option 5.7 TPI Iroc ...no T's or power anything :cool:
