Right now their promotional offers, even on outgoing 2007s, are very weak IMO, with the exception of their trucks and I have no need for a truck as we already have an SUV. I want something fun and economical to drive.
I'm just surprised that there's no 0% financing deals or big rebates right now on the 2007s. And of course my GM card is either not applicable (Aura) or limited to very low amounts ($1000 redemption limit on new CTS or new Malibu) on any of the cars I might consider from GM.

I'll go buy a truck the day they do $2-$3,000 cash back + 0%

Yeah I might too - get a cheap 4-door V8 for like 20k, minus 2k rebate, minus 2k off my GM card = 16k, + 0%... that'd be hard to overlook.
But I'm just not sure I could go from driving a fun to drive car with good mileage back to a truck. I might just end up selling it shortly after.

They start at 24k....you'd be looking 27k for something liveable.
You had a barebones silverado before remember?

Ain't gonna happen unless GM needs to move some metal quickly.
If sales of a particular model sags too much for too long, then you might see some incentives (0% but increased conditions, or a grand back here or there), but the deals like GM was offering a few years ago are all but dead.
All those worker buyouts means that GM (and Ford) no longer need to throw large amounts of cash on the hood just to keep factories running. They're making more money selling fewer cars, so there isn't going to be huge cash giveaways anymore unless something goes terribly wrong.

Isn't this the exact situation we should be applauding? no rebates?

I think as a business plan for GM, it should be applauded...
HOWEVER... If I was in the market to buy right now, I'd love to see better incentives...
I am a little surprized that there aren't bigger incentives on the 07 Malibu/Maxx and some others... They must have their inventory levels under control or be selling them off to rental fleets...

Rental Fleets?
Doubt it.
Chevrolet Malibu retail sales for August was 14,413.
One year ago, it was 14,856.
In short...
GM is selling as many retail Malibus this year with next to no incentives as they were selling last year with bigger incentives.

I was at the dealership on Saturday morning, they had 5-10 2007 trucks left at each place. Almost walked out with a 07 Crew Cab.
The 25th of this month they're supposed to have some new specials, the sales guy said he wasn't sure if they had anything planned for trucks or not.
Also, next month is 'Truck Month'
