Chevelle SS

Yo M.R., how about a CAMARO?? A Z28, you know, the top Camaro that won all the championships and created the legend?? Why does GM feel every car has to have the same model distinction?? SS this, SS that. GXP this, GXP that. :rolleyes: But I can see SS on a new Nova or Chevelle obviously. They better not call the LS6 GTO the GTO GXP. If the Firebird comes back is the top model gonna be the Firebird GXP instead of Trans Am?? Corvette SS instead of Z06?? Come on now already.

younger buyers grew up with camaro/trans am as a fast car not the old lady Buick down the street. Buick needs a ... performance Buick. Great, now my grandparents will run 12's in the quarter :cry:

Keep in mind that the GM Performance Division is there to modify existing vehicles for performance and not to produce their own vehicles.

My question is what is this Chevelle going to be based off of? Will it be another modified Monaro like the GTO? Or is this thing based upon something new? I hope it is a new RWD platform, since it could potentially be used for a new Camaro.

People who are willing to purchase a new 5th Generation Camaro should let GM know this. Go to the Chevy website and e-mail these people so that they get the message. That message should be "Hey, GM, you have a chance to make money off me, but if I don't get what I want, then I will go elsewhere". Elsewhere could definitely mean Mustang - and Ford is going to produce another Mustang.

I'm thinking that this Chevelle SS IS the super secret that Bob Lutz was talking about, which will be displayed at Detroit's autoshow.

And regarding cries over Camaro - get over it. Every topic posted here gets posts "Hey GM, what about Camaro?" THere are plenty of things that GM is doing right at the moment, and you - just have to wait and see what's coming up.

There was once a Malibu trim package available on the Chevelle... however the "new" Chevelle SS will not be based on today's Malibu.

I still remember the times when Buick built some bad-@$$ cars and I'm only 24. Buick has a great history of performance cars...right on up to the Grand National, which was THE beast of the 80's. Unfortunately GM decided to focus Buick on the senior citizens from then on....but I don't think a true performance Buick today would be out of line with its history at all.

Didn't Buick offer a Park Avenue with a supercharger in the 90's?

I'd be willing to bet there is more truth to that premise than not.

Grand national was great, but they are pretty rare. They are fast, I forgot to think about them as I was writing, but I do remember the body on them, pretty blocky. I just wish they could have put that engine into the older camaros and trans am's. Im only 18 so alot of the buick hay day was way before 90's when I was old enough to comprehend an engine.

Maybe your grandparents never drove a GS400 or GS455, and neither did mine, but I'm sure many people's grandparents still have those one-owner cars. Just because you never lived back then to see Buick performance firsthand doesn't mean it never existed. Hell I'm only 27 myself but I have respect for automotive days gone by.

As IZ28 pointed out, that engine was in the 1989 special edition Trans Am.

(Another one of those cars that broke that pesky "Nothing faster than a Corvette rule" some people actually believe in ;) )
