A reason not to sweat congress passing 35mpg CAFE by 2019. This thing gets 43.5mpg has V8 power and isn't some tiny Aveo sized car, its an S-class.
Even if fuel cost $7 a gallon this would still be cheaper for me to drive than my Silverado at $3 a gallon.
Threxx 09-11-2007, 11:39 AM Interesting. A guy here at my work has a 96 Benz E-class diesel that he has converted to run on grease from fast food fryers.
It literally has a slight hint of french fries or something when you stand outside of it while it's running.
Don't forget we should also have an Accord diesel in 2009 with some pretty high expectations for mileage as well as some plug-in electric/hybrid cars like the volt and such.
I think in the next 5-10 years the options for people trying to save on fuel costs are going to be pretty impressive.
Todd80Z28 09-11-2007, 12:50 PM Excellent! Did i read that right though- the S-Class diesel hybrid will actually be a 4cyl?? I suppose it's doable- one of my colleagues has a 1.9l turbodiesel A6 in Ireland. He says the car moves along just fine with the 6spd manual.
Frankly, I'm more excited about these developments than 650hp Corvettes and 500hp Camaros.
jg95z28 09-11-2007, 01:29 PM "Performs like an 8-cylinder (diesel)" can mean anything. :|
224hp isn't much if the thing is as heavy as a tank.
Ken S 09-11-2007, 02:11 PM It would have a nice low end for putting around town..
But with only a peak power curve of 220ish hp, its not going to accelerate very fast to high speeds when you floor it.
I've personally decided that I'm not buying a hybrid car, untill I see the first interations of series hybrid cars, where only electric motors drive the wheels. I'm looking at you Chevy Volt.

Real greenies are more concerned with particulate emissions on diesels than mpg now...
Diesel emits some nasty stuff.
STOCK1SC 09-11-2007, 03:12 PM Eventually all that's gonna happen is the govt is just gonna add a highway mileage tax onto you for the miles you drive to recoup the money they loose when people aren't sucking down as much gas. Either way their getting their money. It's kind of like cigarettes, the govt is saying how bad it is and how everyone should stop but they use the money from cig taxes to fund healthcare and all sorts of pet projects. They need a certain amount of people to stay addicted so they can have their funding. It's a wonder we aren't charged an air tax yet to breathe.
jg95z28 09-11-2007, 05:33 PM Didn't AB 1488 pass in California earlier this year? AB 1488 would require the CARB to begin a pilot program for emission testing of diesel vehicles under 14,000 lbs beginning in January 2009.
And as we all know, the rest of the country tends to follow California's lead in emissions standards. :p

WAY TO GO CALIFORNIA!!!
Had to ruin it for the rest of us!!!
You and your D*MN clean air!!!:death:
:p
routesixtysixer 09-11-2007, 05:50 PM Don't forget that you are combining the high costs of hybrid drivetrain with equally high costs of hi-tech diesel engines. Sure, in an S-class car it's not a problem. But is anybody gonna buy a $55,000 Impala?
AdioSS 09-11-2007, 08:02 PM I hope it has better throttle response than the S550.

224hp isn't much if the thing is as heavy as a tank.Between the diesel and hybrid powertrain, and the fact that the E-class is heavy anyways, I'm sure it will be a tank. But, the 320CDI from the past couple years only had 201hp, and it went 0-60 in 6.8sec. Having nearly 400ft-lbs at 1800rpm helps, I'm sure. I expect this will be comparable.
dream '94 Z28 09-12-2007, 11:20 AM So, why does "Maximum Bob" insist diesels aren't the answer, at least short term?

I would imagine the same people who would pay $55,000 for a 650 hp Camaro. :D

The Mercedes Bluetec system (and other similar systems from other manufacturers) does a pretty good job of removing particulates. :)
