You don't "have" to but it would be a good idea. The POS Monsoon wiring is much too small (it's something like 18 or 22 awg). That and it has several connections that you have to redo in order to use the speaker wire with new speakers. The tweeter wires go directly to the HU while the wires to the woofers come from the POS Monsoon amp.

What exactly would I have to do to run new speakers with the stock amp, stock wires, and only 45watts comin out of the HU?

You need to find 2ohm woofers for the doors. The POS Monsoon uses 2ohm woofers and 4ohm tweets for some reason. If you drop in a set of 4ohm speakers you'll lose about half of the power from the amp.

first of all, where can I find 2 ohm speakers for my car?
Also does it make sense to just upgrade the speakers in my 2000 Transam, with the monsoon system, would it make a big difference?

thanks

right now ,with the new head unit, I am running an additional 45 watts through the stock amp. I understand it is not a very good setup, but I can tell the speakers are the weak link at this point. The sysytem is pushing more than the speaks can handle. I need to know if I can just wire up some better speakers until I get a new amp. thanx
