The reason I ask is I have never had one but am about to upgrade to a new kit. Is it really that important and what do they cost???

Yes, do use one is a must. Some places when you refill the bottle, the gases is not filter into your bottle so you might have small particles. So with the filter before the solenoid will caught those small particles and prevent your solenoid from getting stuck in the open postion which will make your engine go :dead: As for the cost maybe 20-30 bucks.

Make sure to put the filter at the solenoid NOT back at the bottle, if something comes loose from inside the line it's not going to catch it. Yes you definitly need a filter I check mine every few weeks and you wouldn't believe the crap that gets in there, there is always something in it.
