Stock 85' Monte SS vs Cammed 98' Camaro SS

Guy at my work just picked up a 85' Monte Carlo SS with an automatic with the factory 305 motor. Thing smokes, exhaust is falling off and he drives it like a race car. He bought it 2 days before I sold my Z. He talked up the car to everyone at my job, I asked if he would want to run the Z before it's sold...he told me he wanted to get it running better first. Well, the Z sells and the day after I drive my 79' Blazer to work. It's got headers and duel exhaust and 39' tires with an overall 10' body and suspension lift, gen 1 350 motor. (No hick remarks!) He see's me with no Z and tells me he wants to race it now, and that smart ass knew it was sold. So after work I tell him I'll run him in my truck, just for fun.

We pull out onto the street and go from a roll and about 10 mph, I had her in low and jumped right out by about a car. Then my tires killed me and he slowly got by. I expected it, just wanted to see why the heck he is talking so much about his "race car" He was so excited he beat me, I gave him a congrats and told him about my new toy which is on the way from Illionois. A cammed 98' M6 SS :D The little punk actually snickered and told me I would just lose again :eek: I got a little fired up, and asked him how much HP he thinks his car makes out of that 305? He said "around 300", I immediately educated him about it's 180 HP at the motor, that's not even to the wheels. Then I asked him how fast he thinks his 0-60 is. I got a mind boggling 4 or 5 seconds...Had to bust his bubble again, it's right around 7.5-8 seconds from what I read about it. He shrugs and says it must be wrong and can't wait to eat up "another" Camaro.

The SS has Nitto 555r's all round, the tsp 228 cam and rebuilt heads along with some suspension mods. I'm not even the least bit worried, but damnit this kid (17) is going to be embarassed next week.

Long story I know, I'm was just a bit fired up today because many of my cooworkers beleive his car is as fast as he makes it out to be, poser. Should I even bother to post up the results?

Thats funny. We definatly want to know how many bus lenths you beat him by. I'm guessing theres a 2.5 to 3 second difference posibly more between the cars So its a 25 -35 car lenth or 15 bus lenths in a quater mile race.:D
You should bet paychecks. Tell him to put his money where his mouth is and that Montes were sleds back in the day and they are still slow now.There is no such thing as a monte carlo thats is fast and completly stock. Theres alot of them around here that people added headers and exhaust and they think they're the fastest things around.:rolleyes:

Those cars run 18-19 seconds in the 1/4....they are really slow.

Speed is relative to the person...to him, his car is blazing fast. An education is in order.

You should just beat him in reverse.;)

Make sure you at least get lunch or gas money out of it.

Trying to get him to put something up to back up his faster car claim, he hasn't seen the SS yet. We will most likely run in the next few days. After finally getting this car and comparing it to my 94' Z28 all I can say is the SS is Godlike!! (in Unreal Tournament voice)

You should get the race on video and everytime he says his car is "fast", just show people the vid.. and of course post it up so we can laugh at him! :D

hang dead even with him on purpose. let him add another "mod" to his car and think hes hot ****....THEN race him for money ;)

Make it fair..Give him a half hour head start...Hopefully he isn't playing you and shows up in his identical beater that runs 9s...Now that would be a twist...

The basic problem is that this kid wasn't born when his Monte was new. It was probably a beater before he started elementary school. He didn't experience the "performance" that was the 80s.

He sounds just like the guys here who buy a box-body GM, add Flowmasters & a tach, and think they're fast. They put that exhaust on everything from Caprices to Town Cars!

I love to hear people talk about how hot there motors are. I just simply agree and go about my business. I dont even tell them I own 2 Camaro's one of them being around 1200 hp. lol You'll find most of the guys with the faster cars won't talk about them. Yeah they'll talk cars, but not about how fast their car is or how badass it is. ANd the guys with the slower cars who think there fast will talk about there 11 second quarter miles w/ a stock Z28 w/ exhaust all day long ... lol

Them things are junk stock...I wasted one in my 350 TPI IROC with no trouble so imagine what'd you do

I got to run the Monte finally. I work with him and his girlfriend and we all got done at the same time. He was hesitant about racing me, but his girlfriend wanted to see. (obviously he brags too much about his car to her too) I asked her what car she wanted a ride in, she said she didn't want to be in the losers car. She hopped in the Monte and we pulled out onto the street. This is at 3am, and I said we run on the highway away from any cars. We roll side by side to the highway slow to about 30 and I start my three honks. He floors it on the first honk, probably didn't know what I was doing. I drop from 3rd into 2nd and hit it. Immediately I get by him, gave him a nice blast of about 6000 rpms as I blew by, I ran to about 90 and shut down. When I looked behind and couldn't count the amount of carlengths I had on him. (20-30) We pull off and he was a bit irratated. Said something like "Oh, the big 350 beats the 305 woohoo" I responded "It's a 346, and now you know where your car stands, don't brag so much" then went home.

He is still a pretty good buddy of mine, I won't talk crap about this race. All I asked is that he not brag about his car every single day until he has a 572 in it :D He is talking about a gen 1 350 but I'm trying to steer him away from that. We shall see what happens, losing races has a tendency to induce "upgrade syndrome" as I like to call it.

GREAT KILL. Friends or not I would bring up the race everytime he mentions his car. Payback for challenging a car thats out of his league. And you can tell his GF that you knew that she was getting in the wrong car.
Hopefully he is'nt going to keep saying that when he gets his new engine he will smoke you. I get that all the time around here. 99% of the time they never end up getting a new engine. Thats why i laugh at them when they say that.

no dude your about 3 seconds off..theyd run low 15's at 90 or so

the early ones were hi 15's but 87 and 88's had a hotter cam and ran low 15's
my dad had a 87ss 3.73;s and posi that he bought new off the lot..ran 15.1x's@89-90 all day

I say tell him to trash his monte, and join the fbody club.:cool:
