A salesman at a dealership once told me that dark colour paints are softer than lighter colours, and that a black/navy blue car would be more prone to scratches and stone-chips than say a silver car.
Is this true?

Not true. dark colors will just show swirls and scratches more than light colors will, paints are the same hardness. :)
