need some suggestions on electrical stuff.

donno if this is the right fourm BUT the problem is close to ignition so... here we go..


im just trying to see what everyone is doing with all their aftermarket electrical add ons such as: water pumps, extra fans, meth system, line lock ect. lets say you add on 5 different aftermarket systems that need 12volts to run, how would you get the power to those 5 different systems w/o just spicing into any wire you can find that has power only when the ignition is on? im asking this b/c i dont want to keep running all kinds of wires to either my battery or to various other power sources. would it be ok if i were to just use a buss bar with power supplied from the battery and use some kind of huge relay to give power to the buss bar when the igniton is on? is so where could i get a buss bar and a relay that would hold up to that job? any other suggestions? i plan on having a water pump, line lock, oil cooler fan, snow meth, MSD, any prolly something else i donno yet. basically i want something that will look good or that i can hide while still being safe and consistant. thanks in advance

The red "+" box right next to the battery is the best place to make the tie-in. With a large number of connections, I've seen a second box added. Most large amp loads should be run through individual relays, with a correctly sized fuse in the wire from the "+" box to the relay.

cool thanks injuneer, but wouldnt that be a constant hot? i would feel better if everything was powerless when the ignition was off. think this would work?

If you run all the wires from the "+" box to the individual relays, you will have +12V at the relay, but the relay will not be connected to the load = no current flow, and no possibility of current flow. You wire the "signal" terminal of the relay from a switch +12V source ("IGN" spade lug in the fuse box at the end of the dash). That way the relay only completes the circuit to the load when the ignition is on. I have numerous components running that way - second fuel pump, nitrous bottle heater, remore bottle valve, fan for my auto trans cooler, nitrous solenoids (several other switches in the signal circuit), etc.

TRUE... ok cool. never noticed a spade nut by the fuse box before, maby b/c iv never looked for it. or are you just talking about the fuse part? im not home or else i would go look. thanks for your help.

Its a spade "lug", not a "nut", and its in the fuse box at the end of the dash. At the bottom left, under fuse 9 and next to fuse 13, there's a small square hole, labeled "IGN". Inside the square hole is a spade lug.... a 1/4" wide male blade. You go to Radio Shack and get a crimp-on 1/4" female connector, and it pushes right over the blade.

typo i ment lug. ok now that i know its a male side of a flat quick disconnect connector... lug sounds like maby it was a stud or something. thanks for the help either way i didnt know that there was a plug in for a ignition reference.
