SpeedDemon02SS 07-10-2007, 10:08 AM Hey all. looking for some feedback. Id like to get a radar detector. Want a battery operated one so i have no wires and i can put it behind mirror. i am looking towards the escort solo s2. a friend has one and says it works great. only problem is its $340 price tag.
moparman 07-10-2007, 12:24 PM Read around over here: www.radardetector.net/
mthegodfather 07-10-2007, 12:40 PM Solo S2 would be my choice for wireless.

Yep, go there and read. They will probably advise against a battery powered unit and I will too. Read there first, ask questions, they are a real sharp group there. Just like the guys and gals here.
SpeedDemon02SS 07-10-2007, 12:54 PM why would you advise against a battery unit? I dont want a wire haning down, and i dont feel like cutting my power lines to the dome lights to hard-wire it.
THE_RUCKUS 07-11-2007, 09:44 AM i work for best buy and i've gotten a chance to play with those. simply badass.
SpeedDemon02SS 07-11-2007, 09:46 AM how much do they go for at best buy? still 325?
fredmr39 07-11-2007, 12:11 PM I've got a friend who uses it -- I've never heard him complain.
Ten_32 07-11-2007, 03:22 PM Instead of wireless, go for a built-in unit. A friend of mine has his Valentine One hardwired... it's mounted behind the rear-view mirror and the power/signal wires run under the headliner, down the a-pillar, and to their respective destinations. He has the readout box mounted in front of his gauges. Very clean look, hard to notice if you're not looking.
SpeedDemon02SS 07-11-2007, 03:31 PM i want to be able to take it from car to car.
THE_RUCKUS 07-12-2007, 11:12 AM i believe its in the ballpark of 300
I know the one with Blue LED's is more expensive just because it's blue.
SpeedDemon02SS 07-12-2007, 11:18 AM grrrr. they should be free. ;) but only for people with fast cars.
JJJ93z 07-12-2007, 02:02 PM Valentine1. It is the best detecting unit available IMO. I have had several Cobra models when I was a teenager and those seemed to work alright, however after "living with the arrows" (that show you where the radar is coming from) its hard to go back to the "beep beep" with illuminated led that says theres radar somewhere.
I have my V1 hardwired in both my Z and my WJ and just unplug it when I switch vehicles, not a big deal and its worth having that kind of protection in both vehicles.
Cordless detectors are junk. They may work well when they have full power but after that battery drains then you are taking your chances on what signals it will pick up. Check out this link for a better description of what I am talking about.

If youre even thinking of spending at least a couple hundred save up and get the V1 ($399). Hard wire it in, it will look really clean and you will learn a little something about wiring in the process. And you definitely will not be disappointed with the V1s performance. I pick up cops shooting radar literally 1.5mi-3mi ahead of me at times. to V1
SpeedDemon02SS 07-12-2007, 02:12 PM I know about wireing. Ive wired my friends unit in his cars. I just didnt want the hassle in mine of removing the head liner and junk.
I have a Solo 2 and it works great even when the batteries are getting low, and it is nice to be able to switch it from car to car even when i`m in someone elses car it has payed for itself in saving me from tickets many times over

If you have experience then it will not be a problem at all.
1.Remove "A" pillar
2. Remove fuse panel cover,Wire in hot and ground
3. Pull back headliner a little and feed radar unit wire to desired spot
4. Put radar on glass and connect wire
It probably took me 15 minutes.
Just like U240 said: Go for cordless if you want convenience and plan on driving in many other peoples cars, but realize that there is
going to be a performance loss compared to a unit that is receiving full power ALL THE TIME.
SpeedDemon02SS 07-12-2007, 03:22 PM hmm...we shall see. its mostly a whim...ive never had one, and dont really need on. i only get popped for not having a licence plate on the front of hte car or tint anyway.

The Escort Solo S2 is the best cordless radar detector in the U.S. but it still can't even touch the best corded model like the Valentine One. Because the Escort Solo S2 is battery operated, it is off 80% of the time and it has trouble detecting instant-on radar, POP radar, and radar over a hill.
Look how bad it did in the over the hill radar testing at the bottom of this page.

Do yourself a favor and get the Valentine One and hardwire it. If you want to move it from car to car, get another hardwire kit from Valentine Research and put it in the other car.
